How to Handle Going Bald

Man going bald in the mirror - image from Idle Man
When you have hair it’s easy to choose a hair style and try different things. What do you do if you’re someone who’s beginning to bald or is bald? First of all, don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re going to look bad bald.

That’s the biggest misconception and we’re going to show you how to handle going bald. You’ll enjoy the many options you have that pairs with balding.

Bring Out the Accessories

Going bald boils down to having one less thing to work with in your overall style. You need to find something else to replace what’s missing. Accessories are the easiest and quickest option to make up for a lack of hair.

Glasses – this option can change your style a lot. Even if you don’t need a prescription glass you can use sunglasses and normal glasses just for their looks. It’s easy to get multiple pairs to match your appearance, make you look smart, or sporty glasses.

Hats – another easy option that you can match with many different styles. Pick yourself up a couple different types of hats for different occasions. Just stay away from the fedora, though, please no fedora.

Jewelry – this option isn’t as helpful as the others but does play a helping role. Usually, some light jewelry combined with a hat or glasses. The key is to make it a small additional touch and to not wear a lot of jewelry or something that stands out to much.

Facial Hair

One of the biggest things you can do for the greatest impact to pair with going bald is a beard. A beard will help you look great while going bald.

If you’re unsure what kind of beard will look good on you the best go to is your standard full beard. Give it 2 months of full growth and then trim it with a #3 hair clipper guard will usually give you a nice beard. There are many reasons to be bald with a beard and you must admit the facial hair looks great on other bald men you’ve seen.

Look at the celebrity examples out there. Plenty of examples of men with no hair and facial hair in the celebrity world.

Benefits to Being Bald

Man shaving head going bald in the mirror

Time and Money – Once shaving your head becomes routine you’ll no longer need to see a barber. Think of the amount of time and money you’ll save overall. Comparing the cost to shaving your head compared to trying to regrow hair through products or surgery it starts to not look so bad.

Women Like It – While going bald isn’t the best way to attract females you must admit they do love it. Women like men who are confident and being confident enough to embrace your baldness is attractive.

Masculine – When you’re bald you immediately gain this illusion of dominance. It just comes with the territory and you look more masculine. What guy wouldn’t want to appear even slightly more masculine without putting in much effort?

Before You Go!

I hope this article put a new spin on being bald for you. It’s really nothing to worry about and not something you should try to fight off. If you’ve been dealt the bald card with genetics embrace it.

Let us know what you thought about this article and maybe give some of your own tips for being bald below. Thanks for reading.

How to style a classic side-parted haircut

Men's hair style at the barbers

The pompadour is a classic men’s haircut that refuses to go out of fashion. It has been reinvented time and time again and continues to remain amongst the most popular choices in barber shops all over the world.

Originally named after Madame de Pompadour, who was King Louis XV’s mistress, the classic pomp was made most famous in the 1960s by the King of Rock himself, Elvis Presley. Today, the pomp has many modern variations and has been worn by key celebrity influencers such as Brad Pitt, Jon Hamm, Zac Efron, and David Beckham to name but a few.

To celebrate this classic slicked-back look, The Bluebeards Revenge has teamed up with industry-leading barber Tom Chapman. The Devon-based barber owns Tom Chapman Hair Design in Torquay, and is the proud founder of the Lions Barber Collective charity.

Below, Tom has given expert tips on how you can create the perfect pomp in the comfort of your own home. A word of warning; if you combine his tips with our video, you can expect some serious hair envy from those around you!

It all starts at the barbers

Man having hair styled at the barbers

To create the perfect side-parted pomp, you’ll need your hair styled a certain way. A typical pompadour features short sides, a short back, and longer hair on top that’s swept upwards. Ask your barber for a tapered cut with plenty of length on top and you can’t go wrong. For a more comprehensive example of what to ask your barber for, watch this barber to barber video.

At home

Start by washing your hair in warm water to make sure any previous hair products are removed. Then, rough dry your hair with a towel and apply The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Paste as a pre-styling agent.

A side-parted pompadour does require some maintenance, so you will need to invest in a hair dryer if you don’t already have one. Trust me, it’s worth the investment.

Blow-dry your hair and use The Bluebeards Revenge Quiff Roller to add volume to the pomp. Getting the best results from a quiff roller requires some practice, especially if you’re wielding a hair dryer with your other hand. It’s all about gently twizzling the brush through your locks and guiding the hair backwards to give the pompadour its iconic slicked-back look. Don’t forget to use a comb to exaggerate your natural side-parting for a bolder finish too.

Finally, finish the look by applying The Bluebeards Revenge Pomade. Take a small amount of this water-based, high-shine product and rub it between your palms and finger tips, then slick it through your hair from front to back. Use a comb to create a tight and tidy style, or just rough it up a little with your hands for a more rugged look.

And there you have it – a modern take on a classic men’s hairstyle that’s suitable for both the office and a night on the town. Enjoy!

Take a look at our previous article with The Bluebeards Revenge and Tom Chapman where we look at the hottest hair styles for 2017, here.

Premium men’s grooming brand The Bluebeards Revenge has teamed up with leading barber Tom Chapman to identify the top five men’s hair styles/trends for the coming year.

A new hairstyle is one of the easiest and cheapest ways for a man to kick-start his confidence” says Tom Chapman, one of the most sought after barbers in Britain, owner of Tom Chapman Hair Design and co-founder of the Lions Barber Collective.

Below, The Bluebeards Revenge and Tom Chapman outline the top five styles for 2017, what you should ask your barber for and how to maintain the look at home.

Side-Parted Pompadour

An older man with a grey beard in a suit in front of a wood back ground

The pompadour is a classic barbershop cut that’s known for its versatility: it can add professionalism to your office antics, while also presenting a delightful suave to your evenings out.

Ask your barber for:

A tapered cut with plenty of length on top to create the classic pomp look.

How to style at home:

Apply The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Paste to wet hair as a pre-styling agent.Blow-dry your hair and use The Bluebeards Revenge Quiff Roller to mould your new style into shape making sure to create a side-parting. Finish by applying a small amount of The Bluebeards Revenge Pomade and comb through for the desired effect.

Scissor-Cut Contour

Dapper looking man in suit in front of wood background

With tapered cuts and fades being all the rage, a top-quality scissor-only cut will always stand out from the crowd, especially when it boasts this much texture.

Ask your barber to:

Put the clippers down and use scissors to create a textured look that’s longer on top and shorter on the back and sides.

At home:

Apply The Bluebeards Revenge Sea Salt Spray to wet hair as a pre-styling agent.
Blow-dry your hair and use The Bluebeards Revenge Quiff Roller to create volume and texture on top. Finish by scrunching The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Paste into your hair for a look that will last all day.

Tapered Crop

Dark haired man with beard in a suit in front of a wood background

The tapered crop is a style that’s easy to maintain on a daily basis, yet has enough texture and personality to leave you feeling on top of the world.

Ask your barber for:

A tapered back and sides that blends into a choppy, textured top.

At home:

Apply The Bluebeards Revenge Sea Salt Spray to wet hair and rough dry with a towel to create a natural look with added texture. Finish by evenly distributing The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Clay from the root up.

Disconnected Slick-Back with Burst Fade

Very smart young man with blazer over his shoulder in front of wood background

This cut sounds a little complicated, but in reality it’s a modern adaptation of the classic slick-back that provides a professional, classy style.

Ask your barber for:

A grade two on the back and sides that fades away to the nape; leave plenty of length on top so that it can be slicked-back to the crown.

At home:

Apply The Bluebeards Revenge Sea Salt Spray to wet hair as a pre-styling agent. Blow-dry the hair straight back towards the crown of the head using The Bluebeards Revenge Quiff Roller. Finish by running your fingers through your hair with The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Paste for added hold.

Caesar Crop with Surgical Line

A man with a beard wearing a white shirt in front of a wood back drop

The Caesar crop is a classic cut that’s been modelled by many celebrities throughout the years. This adaptation incorporates a surgical line for a more millennial finish.

Ask your barber for:

A drop-fade on the back and sides with a scissor-cut top and a fringe.

At home:

Apply The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Paste to wet hair and blow-dry it forward towards the fringe using The Bluebeards Revenge Military Brush. Rub a small amount of The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Clay between your palms and fingers and scrunch into the tips of the fringe.

Maintaining & taming your beard!

Beard Header

A full and well-groomed beard is a point of pride for a lot of guys. Especially in recent times beards have become quite the fashionable trend among modern men. However, achieving a proper beard is not that simple, and just growing out a beard without much grooming is just going to be you looking like a hobo or something! So there are a few tips and tricks you should know if you want to achieve a proper manly beard without looking scruffy!

Getting started with a beard

Don’t let the itch get you

The first little while of growing out a beard can be the hardest for some, due to the itchiness that comes with the short hard hairs of your stubble. Just hang in there, after a while the itchiness goes away as the hairs become longer and softer.

Be patient

Let your beard grow out a little before you start to trim and shape it. Even if you want to wear your beard short and close to your face, it is recommended that you let your beard grow approximately and inch or an inch and a half before you start shaping it.

Be realistic about your beard

Not everyone can grow out an awesome beard. Unfortunately genetics gives some of us scraggly and patchy beards, instead of the full mountain-man type beard. So be realistic about what you can grow and cannot grow.

Beard trimming

Consider getting a pro to do it

If you are a little unsure of how to exactly trim your beard the best way, consider going to a professional barber that can do it for you. Not only will they be able to give you an awesome trim, but they can probably even give you some tips on how to maintain your specific beard (as everyone has different hair types and facial features).

Have the right tools

If you decide to go the DIY route for maintaining your beard, you need to make sure you have the right tools available. Using a rusty old pair of scissors is not going to do it! Consider getting a decent electronic beard trimmer. A beard trimmer’s clippers will allow you to more accurately trim and shape your beard while also cutting your beard to a specific length. I recommend getting the rechargeable cordless beard trimmers. They might be a little pricier than other options, but in the long run you will be glad you made the investment!

You should also consider getting a good comb to comb your beard with. For your beard a wide-toothed comb is best (as your beard hair can be thick and coarse), while if you have a mustache that you want to keep neat, a fine-toothed comb will be the right option.

Careful when wet

When you trim your beard, be careful to do it when the hair is still wet. Wet hair can look a lot longer than when it is dry. So the best would be to rather trim your hair once dried.

Keep in mind the shape of your face

Your beard and your jaw should work in tandem to achieve a nicely graduated, oval shape. If you have a square or round jaw, you’ll want to grow your beard fuller on the bottom to elongate your face. If you have an oblong or rectangular face, you’ll want more hair on the sides while avoiding more length beneath the chin.

To help maintain a balance between the two sides of your face, you may find it useful to start near the ear on one side and trim down to the chin. Then repeat on the other side.

Keeping your beard clean

Shaving & Grooming from ManlyStuff.ie

Grooming & Shaving from ManlyStuff.ie

Beard hair is hair too, so shampoo and condition!

Just like you would do with regular hair, you should shampoo and condition your beard hair. A mild shampoo is usually easier on your skin. After shampooing, go over to the conditioner to get a softer feel on your beard. Be sure to rinse thoroughly in order to avoid flaking.

Don’t blow dry

Avoid blow drying your beard as the warm air will dry out your skin. Instead you should rather use a dry towel to wipe and dry your beard.

Beard oil

If you really want to get your beard soft and shiny, you should invest in some good beard oil. There are a bunch of different beard oil options out there, and you can even get recipes off the Internet to make your own if you really wanted to. So experiment with some beard oils and see what you like best.

Daily combing ritual

You should comb and brush your beard on a daily basis to untangle hairs and to also train them to grow in a specific direction. This will help you to maintain a specific shape for your beard.

The Bearded Truth – Grizzly Adam Beard Care

GA11

Spring brings warmer temperatures, causing increased sebum production, meaning its more important than ever to keep your facial hair clean and deodorized. With this in mind, we’ve test run a quaint little bard care company called Grizzly Adam Beard Care that will be right up all of you beardy-bastards’ street. We’ve tests 3 of the products so you can avoid synthetic shampoos that strip your beard of natural oils, and opting instead for an all natural soap or a cleansing oil. These alternatives to store bought shampoos will keep your beard clean and deodorized without stripping it of necessary nutrients.

For the past three weeks Matt has had the pleasure of reviewing the Grizzly Adam Beard Care bundle. The kit contains products would cost £44.95 (but a lot more if all purchased separately). Included in the bundle is:

  • BEARD WASH 200ml – A Gentle Beard Shampoo and Wash by Grizzly Adam – Formulated Specifically For Your Beard and Moustache
  • PREMIUM BEARD OIL for Men – Keep Your Beard Healthy, Groomed and Tamed Naturally. Moisturizes Beard Hair and Skin, Eliminates Itching and Dandruff (Beard-druff) for a kissable and respectable beard. Use daily for the best beard effect
  • GRIZZLY ADAM BEARD BALM is the top gentlemans leave-in beard conditioner and thickener with natural oils to help with brittle beards, beard-druff, itching and split ends on the market. Fight patchiness! Use daily for the best beard effect

Upon opening the package, I was immediately impressed by the design and construct of the items. From the simple, yet elegant, cut logo and text, to the polished branded bottle, I was swept off my feet from the get go! If that wasn’t enough to get you excited about this product, the products have a clean and appealing scent! As soon as you open the package, you will smell the amazing goodness!

Firstly, we begin with the Beard Wash, it foams nicely with warm water and is easy to work into the beard. If you take a while to wake up in the morning then you’ll find this gives a much-needed zesty slap around the face!

Simple to apply and work into your morning shower routine adding no time to wait you would normally do. Lather it up whilst you wait for your shower gel to settle in elsewhere.

Secondly, the Beard oil. Other than the scent, which sets this item apart from its competitors is it helps to hydrate your skin and also to look after your beard at the same time. It works to provide essential oil to your skin and this penetrates the follicles of your hair. When your hair follicles are well moisturised this helps to ensure that your hair does not dry out or become brittle. Moisturised skin will be soft and smooth and using beard oil helps to avoid itchy or flaky skin which can cause discomfort.

To use, simply pour a dime-sized amount of product into the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, and lightly rub into your beard (use a nickel-sized amount for longer beards). And remember, when putting new products in your beard, it is best to do so after a shower. This allows your hair to fully absorb the product and its nutrients.

NOTE: When placing oily products into your beard, it is important to know that you should always start mid-shaft and rub down to the tips of the hair. Oily products should not be applied to the root of the hair since that will be the healthiest part of the hair. If desired you may want to blow dry your beard to dry out some of the excess oil.

This product can be used every day, or every few days (depending on your bearded needs). It is also important to understand this is an oil-based liquid and will not aid in keeping fly-aways and curly-q’s down as it doesn’t have enough weight to make your hair lay flat. After three weeks of use, my beard feels softer and in better quality, it has aided in keeping my hair untangled.

Next comes the Wax.  There are a few ways of applying this product to your mustache. The first way is to use the back of your nail to scrape away small layers of wax and ball them up (about the size of a skittle). Rub the skittle-sized wax between your two index fingers until it becomes fibrous when separating your fingers. Once this is done, slowly spread the wax on one side of the mustache, starting from the center of the lip and moving out to the tip.

The wax holds fairly well. Inevitably you will have to monitor your mustache, as the wax may degrade throughout the day (especially when you eat and drink a lot, or if your body generates a good amount of heat). Still, this wax holds up better than any other that I have tried to date.

This all-natural, leave-in conditioner is perfectly formulated to prevent split ends, control frizz and tangles, soften whiskers for those intimate encounters, relieve dry, itchy skin, reduce patchiness, and make you and your awesome beard much more attractive. Beard Balm works for all varieties and lengths of facial hair.

GA1

So the question is, would we recommend this product? Based on the scent alone, yes! However, at a price point of £44.95 for the set, it definitely ranges on the more expensive side of things. But as the saying goes, you get what you pay for, and in this case you get a good quality product that smells good and lasts relatively long. The delivery of the product was quick and pain-free, costing £3.99 the product arrived in 2 days! Easy to work into the routine, not time consuming at all and sizes are bang on for value for money – a lot of others in the market are very expensive for lower quantity.  Either way you can’t go wrong with Grizzly Adam Beard Care.

Would we use it again? YES!

Thanks to Grizzly Adam for the free products, to provide this review.

Super Cool, Extra Hot, Ibiza, Rocks!

So this weekend marks the 20th Anniversary of Radio One in Ibiza and it seems like every guy and his scrunchy is heading there!

This weekend’s events mark the very peak of peak season, clubbers, so if you are in Ibiza on Friday the 31st of July you’re going to want tto look your best at the open air Ushuaïa Beach Hotel. 7000 will rave with DJ sets from none other than Disclosure and Calvin Harris, the event hosted by Radio 1 darling, Annie Mac…so stand out from the crowd!

Like every night, all season, in Ibiza, the party rages poolside from 17:00 until midnight over a jam packed weekend that is completely free of charge, a nightmare to consider what to wear though, right?!

All this comes as a bit of a blow knowing that only 2 weeks ago I was there, in the thick of it, partying on down on the White Isle, but maybe I can help…

If your like me, whilst I was there I wanted to look top notch, the freshest of fresh and slick, fitting in with the crowd, but managing to spin my own alternative style on what I was wearing. All this in 35+ degree heat. Which, with a bit of planning and knowing what to take can be achieved!

For those big nights that I hit Ushuaia, Amnesia and Cafe Mambo, I had 3 staple outfits that would keep me cool (in the heat), recognizable to my friends, and hopefully a fashionable guy to onlookers…all for a reasonable price. Which actually happened…I hope!

So if you’re actually interested and want to wear more than your swim shorts at these events, here goes:

Ushuaïa:

Grey Softmore Shorts, with long cream drawer string – TOPMAN £14 (currently in sale) // Vintage, light weight short sleeved short – Wild Clothing Nottingham £9.00 // White Ankle Sports Socks – Primark Mens – 5 pairs for £4 //  Grey, White, Peach Nike Air Max 1 – ProDirect (Great offers and discounts on Nikes) // Retro Punk Flip-Up Glasses – EasyPeasyOnlineStore Ebay £5.50

Amnesia:

Multi-coloured marble effect swim shorts – Primark Mens – £4.50 // Cobalt Blotch Poplin Short Sleeve Casual Shirt (worn open) – Topman £15 (currently in sale) // Nike Low Tops Dip Dye green & white – ProDirect

Cafè Mambo:

White super skinny jeans (rolled up)- Asos Menswear £25 // *Rewear* Cobalt Blotch Poplin Short Sleeve Casual Shirt (worn open) – Topman £15 (currently in sale) // Loafer Burgundy Tassel Loafers – Topman £20 (Currently in Sale) // Snapback – SIZE? £21.

Of course you want to keep your luggage as light as possible, so I re-wore a few key items in different ways.

Hopefully this little guide to where you can find a couple of things in the sale will help!

You also can’t beat a good best and short combo! ✌🏼️

Scissor Sister – Amy @Q Hairdressing

“I better make sure it looks good if you’re going to blog about it”

Just short of 4 years ago I met Amy Stanger at Q Hairdressing & Beauty in the Nottingham’s Lace Market. I’d been going to Q for a few years to have my barnet chopped, when after Amy became my barber!
To cut a long story (not hair) short, Amy is great and a true professional! For nearly 4 years, I’ve put her through a lot, I change something about my hairstyle regularly and with smile and a laugh, Amy gets on with it and I always leave feeling trim, stylish and relaxed!

Amy has recently become self-employed, still working from within Q and the girl needs credit where credit is due!

Today, I ran in for my 4-weekly-chop, unbeknownst to Amy that I’d planed a complete restyle…as per, we had a chat, had a laugh and she cracked on! As you’ll see below, I’ve had a lot cut off and Amy’s created a shorter, sharper, smarter more textured style for me…I’m more than happy with the results!

My shave, cut and restyle cost me £20, a bargain by fair! I think my hair makes up part of my look, and always feel completely chuffed by Amy’s work every time. A bonus to Q is that they always have a cracking playlist on and the friendly nature of all the staff is humbling!

So gents (or ladies) if you’re in need of a stylish, professional cut, colour or restyle and happen to be in the Nottingham area, head straight to Amy & Q!

Take a look at Amy’s Instagram page, you’ll see how creative and skilled she is here: AmyQHairdressing.

If you would like any more information about styling or prices, give Amy or Q a call on 01159583030 or drop her a direct message via Instagram or Facebook!

Scrub away at the price – ManCave Grooming

“The role of a Mountaineer encompasses all aspects of the Huntsman, Pioneer and Explorer calling on a variety of natural resources to command his terrain.” (ManCaveinc.com)

I’ve never been one for ‘manscaping’ products, usually I grabbed whatever shampoo and shower gel that was on offer. This was, however, until I received some ManCave Grooming products as a present…

Bargain Alert!!

Before I tell you a little bit more about ManCave, take a look at 5 piece Gift Set which is currently only £19.99 at feelunique.com, saving yourself £23.28p!

www.feelunique.com/mancave

Without going into too much details at risk of boring you, the ManCave range adds something different to your morning routine. I never used a ‘FaceScrub’ or a moisturizer before, but with ManCave’s caffeine free and whiskey scent products, I was sold!

I shower once or twice a day…and these products are long lasting. To say I was bought my first range in December 2014 and I’m only just restocking, proves that for the price of these items, the quality and quantity doesn’t reflect the price…it exceeds it!

In summary, the range is focused on replacing man-made chemicals with a precise amalgamation of natural ingredients where even distinctly possible – all while using the most sustainable sources of production…so there you go, it’s even suitable for the ‘eco-warriors’.

The Gift Set is a bargain not to be missed, if you bought each of the five items individually it would cost £43.27, so it’s practically half price!

The ManCave range can be bought on the high street (Boots, Sainsbury’s, Debenhams) or from their online store ManCave Men’s Grooming.

I found this deal by searching for ManCave’s #ownthebathroom and for more “supreme-performance men’s grooming products, keeping you naturally fresh” follow @ManCave on Twiter.

Above. My dwindling ManCave products, in need of a replenish.
