Is your skincare routine right for your skin type?

Bulldog Skincare for Men, Skincare, Skin, Men's Grooming, Men's Skincare, Men's Skincare types

Your skin is your biggest organ, it regularly gets scratched, heated, cooled, bruised and burnt. Because your skin is the first defence against the environment, it plays a big role in protecting your body from the elements, keeps your immunity levels up by protecting against pathogens, virus and bacteria. It also has to regulate your temperature.

Skin constantly regenerates and renews itself. The outer layer, called the epidermis, is as thin as a pencil line. It consists of a protective layer of skin cells that continually sheds and gives way to new cells. Below the epidermis are the dermis and hypodermis, two layers that produce the oil, collagen, and elastin that give your skin support, elasticity, and shine.

On top of that it is also one of your main erogenous zones, yet much of the time your skin is not given any thought or much care. Perhaps it’s time to change that, after all, how good you look depends on how well you take care of it.

SKIN CARE FOR MEN

For many men skincare is an unknown quantity, although most men know that they should be taking some sort of care for their skin, many are a little uncomfortable talking about or acting on any skin care issues as it is seen as a bit too feminine. After all that’s what women do, discuss skincare and anti-aging products, wrinkle cream etc. But any switched-on guy will know that they should be making the best of the skin they have. Although skincare products have historically been designed for women, times have changed and there are now many products that are designed just for men’s skin types.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with Bulldog Skincare who are stocked at MMUK, to bring you a guide on how Bulldog Skincare can be your one stop shop for skin care products.

HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE

There are 4 basic skin types: oily, dry, combination and normal, but be aware that your skin type will change from time to time and you will have different needs depending on the time of year, if you are under stress, or as you age.

DRY & SENSITIVE SKIN

Bulldog Skincare for Men, Skincare, Skin, Men's Grooming, Men's Skincare, Men's Skincare types

Skin is tight, drawn, flaky with a dull complexion. Dry skin can lack elasticity and be extremely sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold temperatures. Dry skin occurs when the dermis does not secrete enough oil, or sebum. Often people with dry skin change frequently from normal to dry then back again.

Solutions to dry and sensitive skin

  • Wear suncream: sun damage makes skin less and less able to hold moisture or feel smooth
  • Moisturise: good moisturisers should have antioxidants, water-binding agents, and anti-inflammatory ingredients
  • Keep applying moisturiser: If your skin really is dry you can’t use too much. Whenever your skin starts feeling dry, put more on
  • Avoid products that are drying: do not use a soap, cleanser or any product that leaves a dry feeling on your skin. Avoid products with harsh ingredients such as alcohol. Do not over scrub skin
  • Avoid taking long showers: Too much water is bad for skin, it breaks down the skin’s protective covering
  • Exfoliate: increases skin cells turn over giving a more natural, youthful appearance, removing the build-up of old skin cells and replacing them with newer, smoother ones
  • Use a face mask: use a moisturising mask once a week. to revitalise and hydrate the skin.

OILY SKIN

Bulldog Skincare for Men, Skincare, Skin, Men's Grooming, Men's Skincare, Men's Skincare types

Oily skin can change from day to day, depending on the elements. This type of skin appears as shiny, thick, or slightly waxy, often oily skin has coarse pores and pimples and other blemishes. It is prone to blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. In this type of skin, the oil-producing sebaceous glands are overactive and produce excess oil and lipids than is needed. The oil gives the skin a greasy shine, the skin pores are enlarged and the skin has a coarse look.

Solutions for oily skin

  • Keep your face as clean as possible, cleansing two or even three times daily
  • Exfoliate several times a week, this will stop pores from clogging
  • Avoid using products that over dry skin, this paradoxically causes your skin to produce even more oil than usual
  • Wash in tepid water, hot water can strip your skin of needed moisture, while cold water can shock your skin
  • Use noncomedogenic moisturizers and sunscreens, they are oil-free and won’t clog
    pores
  • Use a clay mask once a week this will drain excess oil and clear build-up from clogged pores.

See products for Oil Control here.

COMBINATION SKIN

This can be a mixture of all the basic types, usually the differences are in the T-zone that crosses the forehead and down the nose and chin.

Treatment for combination skin

  • Look for products that normalise your skin, such as those that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs or fruit acids) or retinols, a vitamin A derivative. (Don’t use AHAs at the same time as shaving the combination could cause irritation)
  • Try different products for different areas and follow the tips above in the areas they are needed.

NORMAL SKIN

Bulldog Skincare for Men, Skincare, Skin, Men's Grooming, Men's Skincare, Men's Skincare types

Normal skin is the ideal state for your skin to be in, to keep it this way:

  • Cleanse twice a day
  • Moisturise twice a day
  • Exfoliate once a week
  • Use a mask to give your skin an added lift when needed
  • Use sunscreen to stop harmful UV rays ageing your skin.

YOUR SKIN AS IT AGES

Bulldog Skincare for Men, Skincare, Skin, Men's Grooming, Men's Skincare, Men's Skincare types

One important note about skin is that it changes as you age. The skin will get thinner, dryer, and will get more sensitive as you age, so it is important that you re-visit any products you use as your needs could change and your current products may no longer be effective.

Lots of men have at least some idea that they need to take care of their skin. But in the Western world, most guys are about as comfortable discussing skin care or seeming concerned about looking good as they are with holding a woman’s purse while she shops. This aversion doesn’t change the fact that, just like women, most men need help to take the best care of their skin—they absolutely shouldn’t ignore skin care.

Would you wear men’s make-up?

Men's Make Up

With the male beauty industry quickly catching up with the female, and increasingly niche grooming products hitting the shelves (anyone for a male body hair trimmer?), is it any surprise that male makeup is already becoming the norm.

Forget Keith Richard’s rock n’ roll guyliner, or reality TV stars’ glaringly obvious fake tan; within five years men will be waking up and reaching for foundation and bronzer!

We’ve noticed over the past 5 years that ‘manscaping’ is a phrase commonly used amongst men, no matter what your preference may be. Guys now reach for fake tan, hair conditioner, hair removal kits, teeth whitening gels and most popularly moisturiser. But what do you think when it comes to men’s make-up?

We were recently contacted by MMUK who have recently launched a men’s make-up range. mensmake-up.co.uk is a site specifically designed for men, by men.

They understand the importance of modern day men to look their best every day!  Therefore, they are proud to offer the UK’s widest and best range of makeup for men products, exclusively at their online male makeup store.  Whether you’re in search of a little touch up in the form of a concealer for men, or perhaps a completely fresh and polished look with the help of a men’s foundation, you’re sure to find the product right for you online.

But let’s take one step back.

We must admit, we’re not opposed to using some concealer to cover a spot if we’re heading out for the evening, but is it something we’d discuss? No.

Men's make up, Men's Grooming

Why not?

Why not talk about using basic make-up products? Why not use make-up products? If a little cover up and filling in the gaps gives you confidence, then go for it!

…it’ll save you rummaging through your girlfriend’s make-up bag!

So MMUK sent us a few products to trial, these included a concealer, an eyeliner, a powder bronzer and two moisturisers.

Whilst we’re no experts at applying make-up, this is all very new, the application of the concealer under the eyes (getting rid of those bags) was relatively easy and made a very noticeable difference!

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then your soul is desperately sleep-deprived and agitated. The skin that surrounds your peepers is so delicate and thin that even the slightest hiccup in your sleeping schedule will show up in the form of puffiness or, worse yet, dark circles.

Puffiness is a sign of fluid retention in the tissue, a condition that is exacerbated by a diet rich in salt and alcohol. The fluid can be drained by placing two freezer-fresh metal spoons on your eyes. Dark circles, on the other hand, are usually caused by dilated blood vessels that become visible beneath translucent skin OR simply pop on some of the MMUK concealer. The concealer is perfect for hiding the sins of the weekend.

We’ve not had chance to use the eyeliner yet – maybe that’s one we’re just not ready for yet personally, but it’s been stored in the bedside cabinet for our next rocky outing.

The moisturisers have created a light and clean appearance to the skin.

What’s even better is that these products are made for OUR skin. Guys have a ticker more course skin than women, so it makes sense to apply something that works best with us.

Make up

One thing which certainly has been apparent during the up-rise of men’s makeup is the encouragement ladies give to gents to experiment with a little bronzer for men, men’s tinted moisturiser and even guyliner, amongst others.  Instead of being perceived as a catalogue of grooming outsiders, such male makeup products are now being thrust into the heart of the industry to make men look more appealing, feel more confident and dare we say it?… Look sexier.  Women certainly know what they want in their men, and Makeup For Men UK are here to make sure the battle of the sexes firmly resides on the side of Britain’s alpha males, giving him every chance of success.

Whether it’s to feel more confident, simply hide a blemish or tide eyes, there’s absolutely no shame in purchasing male specific make-up.

Christmas Guide to Last Minute Gifts for Guys

High Street Gent - Christmas Presents under Christmas Tree

Some people are ready to go over the top to get that special someone a gift of their dreams. However, spending excessively on gifts is probably not something you can do every month and definitely not something you can afford twice a month. Now, birthday, Christmas and anniversary are occasions where the price tag doesn’t matter. Still, this doesn’t mean that a good present is necessarily an expensive one. This especially goes when gifting a guy.

So, are you after that perfect stocking filler? Already anticipating the look on his face (or, if your just buying for yourself this Christmas) here are a few great last minute ideas.

There’s still time lads and lasses, lets go-ho-ho-ho…

Wallet

The thing about men is that, although they like getting nice stuff, they value pragmatism above all else. A perfect way to combine the two is to get them a leather-bound wallet. This is also a perfect reminder of your devotion since they will remember you every time they use it. But you can even take this one step further and get your man a Covert Clip travel wallet. By having this wallet, you’re making this gift both unforgettable and completely unique because of it’s practicality and design.

Belt

One of the greatest things about buying a belt is that it’s something everyone wants, but seldom actually comes around to buy for themselves. Here, you will have a plethora of choice like whether you will go for something simple and practical or even buy something handmade  like The British Belt Company belt. All in all, this decision is not your own, since it should be based on the personal taste of the one the gift is intended for.

Socks

Traditionally, sweaters and socks are the most common Christmas gifts. Accidentally, they are also a perfect low-cost option for those who approach the holiday season on a tight budget. The London Sock Exchange offers socks, those with cutting edge patterns, tartan or polka dot motifs as classic as these presents get. However, if the person you’re gifting is a renowned jokester, you can even look for a prank-gift in a form of a particularly silly pair of socks. Needless to say, wearing these at any family gathering would be a great success.

Wristwatch

Some of these gifts are situational. For example, if you know that your friend, family member or a significant other has a job interview after the holidays, you may look for the way to help them out. Buying a full suit may be too expensive even for a Christmas gift. But, you can always get a useful accessory like a wristwatch or a tie. For those in love with retro, you may even want to consider buying a CIRCULR watch, minimalist design yet maximum style. This gift is particularly great for any outfit choice and occasion.

A Vintage Gift

It is human nature to always look at the times long gone buy through a prism of nostalgia. Seeing how they can’t bring back the time, the next closest thing these romantic dreamers resort to is collecting vintage items. If their home looks like more of a Victorian palace than a high-tech man-cave, you may want to consider getting them a nice vintage camera as a final touch. If money is really not the issue, you may even look for a vintage car and buy or, at least, rent it out for them.

Beard Grooming Kit

Another great idea would be to get them Arthur J Hawke beard grooming kit. Sure, everyone agrees that there is nothing more epic that a well-groomed full beard. Still, this is not something that just happens on its own. So, to help the person in question get on the right path, you could get them some starting products like beard oil, wax, and a moisturizer. This shows a great level of intimacy since it requires you to know their skin and hair type. Furthermore, you may also want to look for a nice beard comb and/or brush. Different materials both react and feel different in contact with your beard which is yet another thing to consider.

Underwear

Finally, you can get your friend a sexy, manly or even funny underwear. It all depends on the particular person as well as if the gifted one (pun intended) is going to be on their own when they unwrap it. The underwear that caught our eye is Tani USA. Those luxury underwear pieces are made of Micro Tencel® and Lycra® which makes them one of the most comfortable out there. Perfect for men on the run.

Lets wrap this up…

As you can see, there is a great choice of great gifts for you to go through. The final choice comes down to your personal preference and what you believe your friend/partner would like. Choosing a great gift is not that hard, but in some situations great simply isn’t great enough.

Face the facts

Taking care of your skin is the single most important thing you can do for your appearance. Sure, a sense of style helps, but the best clothing in the world can’t cover up unsightly bumps and blemishes. Even if you think you’re a skin care expert — and chances are you don’t — this refresher course from the basic to the advanced will remind you of what you should be including in your skin care arsenal.

As a man, your skin is unique and using female or unisex products just won’t cut it. The reason for the differences is due to testosterone. The biggest differences are:

Your skin is 25% thicker than a woman’s, primarily due to having higher collagen density than a woman, providing a stronger structural base for the skin. This means less creasing and folding of the skin, also known as wrinkles.

This is also a big reason why men’s faces hold up better over time, if taken care of.

Zeos for Men

So here we go again, we’ve found a great company called Zeos for Men, and we’ve tested their brand new QU3 skin care range with resistem.

Modern city life is very tough on the skin, bombarded daily by waves of pollution and stress and attacked from the inside by convenience foods and fast living, all taking a heavy toll.

This is why Zeos for Men have developed our QU3 Skin Care Range, a 21st century defence system unifying the latest technologies to create a layered resistance to keep the skin’s enemies at bay!

Fielding three primary defences: face & body moisturiser, face scrub & face wash, hair & body shower gel all effectively combine to protect your skin throughout the day.

We’ve tested the products and we’re going to review them below along with some top tips to look after yourselves chaps:

Face wash

Twenty years ago, it was a miracle if men’s grooming including anything more than washing the face with a bar of soap. Unfortunately, using a simple soap is about as bad as doing nothing at all: It can leave your skin taut and thirsty. Instead, use a cleanser that strikes a delicate balance between tough and tender. Look  no further that Zeos…for a natural fragrance gel face wash that’s suitable for all skin types that is strong enough to cut through those overactive male sebaceous glands yet gentle enough to be used every day. This gel smells good, not too potent for first thing in the morning, but leaves your face feeling fresh.

Face scrub

A face wash is just the opening act for facial cleansing. Men’s skin is naturally thicker than women’s, with larger pores that roll out the red carpet for nasty debris. A granular scrub should be used two to three times a week to exfoliate and dislodge dirt deep down. No one likes to look at bumps and blackheads, and scrubbing will help smooth your complexion for a clearer, cleaner appearance. It also softens the skin as a first step toward a less gruesome shaving experience. With Zeos the combination in the little bottle means you don’t have to scrub away, scratching your skin, it softly cleanses with a cracking scent too. It feels natural and clean, it also washes away simply leaving you feeling fresh.

Moisturiser

Even the mildest facial cleansers can leave your skin feeling just plain parched. And don’t think you can cheat the system by using one fortified with a laundry list of special moisturising agents. The truth is that every guy, even those with oily skin, needs to replenish the moisture content of their skin. Something as routine as showering or washing your face with hot water can open pores and allow valuable water to escape. A moisturiser like Zeos is light and breathy, minutes after putting it on it felt as though nothing was there, it wasn’t oily, thick or gloopy, it was a pleasure to use.

This whole process was pretty simple in and out the shower too, so it won’t add time to your routine, even though they’re few products.

Finally, here are the figures gents, no need to hold your breath, they’re so reasonable:

Zeos for Men QU3 Face Wash 150ml – £7.95

Zeos for Men QU3 Face Scrub 150ml – £7.95

Zeos for Men QU3 Face & Body Moisturiser  150ml – £8.95

Zeos for Men QU3 Hair & Body Shower Gel 150ml – £4.95

In the words of Zeos for Men we were ready to “take on the city. Urban defence for urban skin.”
