Aftershave to undies, perfume and lingerie may traditionally top the list of the most romantic yuletide gifts, but a new nationwide survey of more than 1000 people has found that 90% of Brits would actually prefer to receive an experience over a product this Christmas.

In fact, 9 out of 10 of those expecting to find something special under the tree next month would choose a night out at a theatre or show in London above receiving perfume, chocolates, alcohol or underwear.

An experience like a shared night out was also picked as a very romantic and thoughtful gift, in the survey carried out by SurveyMonkey on behalf of London theatre break specialists, BoxOfficeTheatre.com.

Those heading to the high street to buy some bubble bath might want to think twice, as 64.7% of us think bath gift sets are the most clichéd gift, showing a lack of thought and effort on the part of the giver.

With more than half of shoppers saying they wanted to make more time for memories with loved ones, a festive night out to see a showstopper like Aladdin or The Lion King could be just the ticket.

With old staples such as socks, chocolate, home furnishings, perfume and clothing all receiving the thumbs down, it could be time to re-think those faithful standbys in favour of something that shows a little bit more thought and a lot more effort.”

Key findings from the Survey: What do you really want for Xmas this year?

• 64.74% of people associate a bath gift set with a lack of thought and effort, followed by socks (27.01%)
• 78.4% said they would get most enjoyment out of a trip to the theatre or to see a show, followed by clothes or accessories (10.24%)
• 55.36% of people considered putting thought into the other person’s interests as the most important part of gift giving, followed by choosing something to create unique memories for the recipient to treasure (42.27%)
• 64.45% of respondents consider clothing to be the most difficult gift to buy, followed by perfume (17.16%)
