The Top Reasons a Vauxhall Grandland X should be your next car

Vauxhall Grandland X, 4x4, SUV, Car in field, Car in front of Logs, New car

We recently had the privilege of working with Vauxhall when they sent us their brand new SUV and Life HaX tool, to put them through their paces in the modern world. Whilst the SUV may not spring to mind as a must have car in your twenties or thirties – we may have the answers that will change your mind.

The Grandland X

A crossover of ultimate proportion, the Grandland X is Vauxhall’s latest SUV model. Crossover by name, crossover by nature…for someone in his twenties, this car has all the sass that I’m looking for with city living, but could easily ‘cross-over’ into delivering something quite grand in the country.

The Grandland X represents the balance between the functional and emotional benefits of owning a car; it’s both a highly spec’d SUV, ideal for all kinds of family needs, as well an attractive and boldly styled car, adding a sense of ‘grandness’ to the driver’s lifestyle.

Vauxhall see the Grandland X as a car that reflects their adventurous personality – it’s primarily a lifestyle choice, though it has clear functional advantages. Yes, it’s a practical family car for your growing brood, but it’s also quite the toy for any singleton.

The Life HaX tool

Vauxhall Life HaX tool, New tool, Life HaX

Whether you’re a single tech lover or a family man who needs something to help you focus with a car full of kids, the Life HaX tool marks the launch of the Grandland X, the new SUV that was designed with modern parents in mind and has seen Vauxhall Motors look into the ever-changing role of parents to understand what life hacks can help make their lives easier.

The resulting hand-held Life HaX tool helps multi-tasking parents so they can concentrate on enjoying adventures with their family;

  • Lego un-picker – to stop you breaking your fingernails trying to unpick your children’s Lego
  • Wide-angle lens attachment – for those all-important Instagram snaps
  • Macro lens attachment – for awesome close-up photography
  • Power bank – for when your phone runs out of battery on the move
  • iPhone pin – for removing the SIM from your phone
  • Torch – for when you can’t see under the sofa or the back of the boot to find your children’s lost toys
  • Stylus – to give that extra precision when drawing on your tablet
  • Knot un-picker – for when the kids get in a tangle
  • Screwdriver – because traditional household jobs haven’t gone away

With so many tools, ideally you need a bag to carry the Life HaX in. However, if you’re the head honcho of your brood, I imagine you’d have rucksacks or bags to be able to throw the tool in.

It’s greatest bonus for me was the phone charger!

The Reasons you should consider the GrandLand X and Life Hax Tool

A stylish steer

Man driving 4x4, SUV, Vauxhall Grandland X, Sat Nav in car, inside a car

The Grandland X looks as good as it feels to drive – it’s very easy admire its elegant lines, two-tone roof and big alloys. It’s a stand out vehicle when competing for attention in a multi-story car park.

You’ll notice that the new SUV for Vauxhall has taken a slightly different approach to the recognizable style of the brand, something I think brings it into the current era and boasts hope for the years to come.

Unbeatable tech

Boasting an on-board touchscreen, which in the 8-inch configuration tested (there’s also a 7in version) has crisp graphics and is both simple and responsive to operate.

As you’d expect these days it’s all fully connected, whether it’s via Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, a simple USB lead or WiFi. The latter forms part of Vauxhall’s OnStar service, a call centre staffed by advisors who can book hotels or parking spaces for you before sending details to the satnav. Equally as useful, it will alert the emergency services if the car’s airbags are deployed.

A comfortable and spacious ride

Man getting in a 4x4, Vauxhall Grandland X, White Jeep, New Car, Car in Field

The Grandland X is certainly roomy enough to be taken seriously, as well as taller than the two-tone floating roofline might suggest. Its boot capacity is matches its competitors if not easily beats the Nissan Qashqai and Renault Kadjar challengers. What’s more, the space itself is easy to use thanks to a square shape, flat loading lip and a dual-height boot floor on all but the base model. The rear seats can be folded flat too, albeit only in a 60:40 split rather than the 40:20:40 of some rivals.

If you’ve got a big family, it may not be possible to transport everyone in one vehicle unless you drive an SUV. If there’s a darn sight more of you than some families, you need to get from point A to point B at the same time and all you own is a small vehicle, you’re going to have to make multiple trips or take multiple vehicles. One trip in a big SUV, and you’ve saved fuel, taken up less space in traffic and in the car park, and made maximum use of your resources.

The Grandland X has 1,652 litres of boot space, so you can fit all those bulky items safely away, without compromising the seating area.

Unstoppable safety features

Now, whether you’re a family man or one of life’s Casanova’s something you can agree on is road safety. From the first day of the seven-day trial we had with the Grandland X, we noticed it’s unrivaled amount of safety features. Vauxhall have emphasised the attention to safety that’s built into the new Grandland X. Driver Drowsiness Alert has been added to an already impressive array of safety features including collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection.

The dashboard includes a speed restriction notification system, and easy to use control panel near the gear stick for quick access – the number of alerts really enhance the comfort of driving.

Not forgetting the adaptable Life HaX tool, which also plays a big part in controlling the vehicle and making the driver’s life easier.

The Grandland X has an excellent diesel to mileage ration! More cruising for your money!

Back in the old days (five or more years ago), many SUVs were inefficient diesel hogs. But now, there are most SUVs that are rated to achieve over 30 miles per gallon on the highway, still retaining the capacity and benefits of an SUV.

We worked out that the Grandland X 1.6-litre diesel is the best performer, which promises 70.6mpg in manual guise and 65.7mpg with an automatic gearbox.

That figure drops a bit if you pick the 2.0-litre version – that car is auto only and weighs in with a still reasonable 57.6mpg.

Road tax for 12 months is a very reasonable £140.00.

Your dog will love the Grandland X!

Man and dog in car, man in 4x4, 4x4 spacious,Vauxhall Grandland X, Vauxhall, dog

This one is true — dogs do love SUVs. Ask any dog, and they’ll tell you. In fact, a few manufacturers have even put out dog-friendly editions of their SUVS, strictly to appeal to dogs (and dog owners). Ultimately, using a few accessories, like a pet barrier or pet carriers, you can turn your SUV’s cargo bay into a safe haven for your dogs during travel. It’s not safe to allow your dogs to roam freely through the cabin of your car — they may interfere with your operation of the vehicle, or worse, become dangerous projectiles in the event of a collision.

The Quest for the Perfect Tailored Suit No Longer Needs to Ruin You

Suit, Man being measured for a suit, tailoring, tailored suit, tape measure, suits and tuxedo, smart and suits, tie, blazer

Finding the perfect three-piece suit can be a headache for many men. Will you be able to find the right match straight off of a hanger and at an affordable price at any menswear shop? Or will you have to break the bank and pay a (somewhat intimidating) visit to a tailor in order for the suit of your dreams to fit like a glove? And when comes the time to know what fits and what doesn’t, what should you be on the lookout for?

We know finding the perfect timeless suit that’ll last you years is no small feat, but here’s the good news: you don’t have to break the bank anymore for a perfectly tailored suit. Simply follow these steps from our expert, who has provided countless gentlemen with that go-to suit for all occasions.

Picking a Tailored Suit Wisely Starts with Good Fit

Every discerning gentleman deserves a suit that fits him well, and rushing to the nearest menswear shop to buy the first suit in sight is clearly not the best course of action here.

A timeless three-piece suit need not follow the latest trends. Minimalism is the key to a classic, timeless suit. A snug fit that embraces and flatters all of your manly shapes is key to looking effortlessly dashing. Since all men are different and so many factors are coming into play here from height, to chest and torso lengths, to shoulder broadness going the tailor-made route has clear benefits. “People will notice a man of style and substance with great attention to detail in the perfect suit”, says Anthony Horner, owner of Empire Outlet, a company that provides luxury tailored suits at affordable prices for the modern day gentleman.

The perfect cut will fit every body type. It will elongate the shorter man, fit the tallest amongst us to perfection, slim down and hide any unwanted bulges for the self-conscious. A good tailor will know what is best for you — and if you trust them, the results will surprise you.

The Colour: A Matter of Choice, but Don’t Get Too Crazy

You may think of black as the go-to colour for your first suit, but it might be too formal or severe to fit any occasion. Instead, colours like navy blue, grey, and beige, as well as light checker patterns or pinstripes, are fantastic options. These timeless options allow a three-piece suit or any tailored suit to fit any occasion. Tweed has always been a material to consider over the years, but has recently seen a further surge in popularity. Today, it’s a modern essential in every gentleman’s wardrobe and a fantastic option to keep in mind.

The lining of your suit and colour of your tie is where you can get a little more creative. Don’t hesitate to use your tie as a fashion statement, which can give your neutral suit a more current or classic twist, depending on the occasion. As far as colours go, you could pick something that matches your eye colour, or even your partner’s outfit colour. Be creative; ties are a cheap way to jazz up an otherwise classic outfit!

Quality Fabric Makes All the Difference

To look dapper and comfortable, seek out a three-piece suit that’s 100% wool — a durable and breathable fabric. Suits made out of a blend of wool and 2%-5% of elastane for added comfort and ease of movement are also a great option. Beware, however, that some luxury fabrics, such as silk, will make the suit a lot more expensive and a lot less durable. Sticking to wool really is your best bet.

A suit made of exceptional fabric quality and craftsmanship will look straight and even when hanging, with perfectly symmetrical legs and sleeves. The seams should all look even and regular, with no bulging or ripples. Always put your suit to the hanging test!

Finding the suit of your dreams is easy if you follow these simple rules, especially as online tailored suit purchasing has come such a long way in latest years. You can now order fabric samples before committing to having the suit of your dreams made. And you may be surprised to know that such a beautiful, timeless, bespoke item doesn’t need to set you back any more than £200 to £300 from the best companies.

Make sure you take care of your perfectly tailored suit! In order for your it to remain beautiful and fresh for years to come, always make sure to hang it on a padded hanger. To keep it clean, treat it like a coat. Have it aired as often as possible, and dry cleaned only as needed.

Common shaving mistakes & how to avoid them

Harry's, Shaving, Men's Grooming, Grooming, Shave, High Street Gent

As avid followers, you know we’re keen on ensuring you look and feel your best for a good price. As our avid followers, you also know that you shave and have your different approach to it. The question is, is your way, the best way?

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past 6 months, you’ll have not heard of Harry’s…if you’ve been running around town, you will have.

Harry’s believe that you shouldn’t have to compromise when it comes to the products you use, so they’ve designed a grooming brand to be effective and to provide a great experience. The team of more than 600 engineers, designers, craftsmen, and chemists make Harry’s products from the finest materials and ingredients to ensure they perform as well as they possibly can.

We have to agree with what they mention in their mission statement. The craftsmanship of their razor, meant the razor glided over our skin and provided a neat shave. They’re so committed to a good shave, they’ve helped us devise these mistakes you may be encountering when shaving, and how to avoid them.

Mistake One: Poor Skin Prep
Many men and women don’t prep their skin appropriately before shaving. Splashing a few drops of water on your skin doesn’t do the trick, and over prepping can cause your skin to become irritated. Men with a bushy beard or heavy stubble do require a little more prep, but generally, prepping your skin doesn’t have to be complicated.

How to Avoid: Gentlemen, shave either during or right after a warm shower. Ladies, try to stick to shaving in the shower. The steam from the hot water allows the outer layer of your hair to soften, giving you a much cleaner and safer shave. If you have a beard, be sure to use an electric razor (set on low) to trim your hair before shaving.

Harry's, Shaving, Men's Grooming, Grooming, Shave, High Street Gent

Mistake Two: Not Paying attention to Grain Pattern
If you don’t know which way your hair grows, chances are you’re irritating your skin when you shave.

How to avoid: When your hair is growing out, slide your fingers across your skin so you can physically feel which way your hair grows. When you shave, you want to first shave in the direction your hairs because the hair is still long. Your second pass should go against the grain, since the hair will be shorter, thus relieving your skin from any tugging.

Mistake Three: Too Much Pressure
Despite popular the belief that pressing down harder will give you a closer shave, it actually leads to lots of painful cuts and nicks.

How to avoid: Gently glide your razor across your skin, being careful to avoid too much pressure. Using shaving cream can help the razor move smoothly, giving you a much closer shave.

Mistake Four: Using Too Much Or Too Little Shaving Cream
Not using the appropriate amount of shaving cream can have the same irritable consequences as not prepping your skin correctly. Too much shaving cream will cause your skin to become too slimy, leading to a higher risk for cuts. On the other hand, too little shaving cream will not allow your hair to soften up, leading to a rougher shave.

How to avoid: Always use an almond sized portion of shaving cream. If the area you’re shaving is larger, then it’s okay to add a little more, but be careful not to add a lot more.

*Helpful tip: Shaving creams that also provide hydration, like Harry’s shaving gel will give you soft skin and a smooth shave.

Harry's, Shaving, Men's Grooming, Grooming, Shave, High Street Gent

Mistake Five: Using Products Not Made For Shaving

Using body wash, soap, and shower gel can seem like a nice alternative when you’re out of shaving cream. However, products that are not designed especially for shaving can cause trauma to your skin and razor. Soap removes dirt and oils from your skin, contributing to a rougher shave.

How to avoid: Stick to products that are made for shaving

Mistake Six: Improperly Storing Your Razor

If you leave your razor on the shower ledge or bathroom sink, you’re accelerating the dulling process of your razor. Bacteria and excess water will quickly diminish the blade. However, leaving it in a drawer or cabinet can lead to the growth of bacteria.

How to avoid: Invest in a quality razor stand, such as this one. It’s designed especially for keeping your razor above water and bacteria, letting it dry before your next use.

Mistake Seven: Using An Old Blade

Using a dull razor is the easiest way to end up with lots of cuts and nicks, no matter how well you prep your skin.

How to avoid: You should be changing out your blades every 6-8 shaves. While that may seem like a lot of runs to the store, subscription services like Harry’s ensure you receive quality razors right to your door. You can even customize your own delivery schedule based on how often you shave, so you never have to worry about when to change out your blade again.

Try Harry’s for yourself and make practice, perfection. Start your trial for only £3.95 here.

Does your watch match your style?

Men's Watch, High Street Gent, Watch Tips, Watch, Top Tip, Men's Lifestyle

For watch collectors, one more is never enough. It doesn’t matter if you own five watches or fifty watches, there is always another one around the bend that will catch your fancy and earn a spot in the rotation. However, for most men, even if they own some timepieces, they favour one or maybe two for everyday use.

Since we’re talking the ‘average man’, it also has to be noted that the typical gentleman doesn’t collect watches. Certainly, he wears one. But his collection – so to speak – probably consists of just one or two timepieces. Possibly a third at the most.

So for men who have the desire to own and wear just a single watch, or for collectors who have numerous and yet still favor an EDC watch, how does one begin to decide what to wear?

The answer is easier than you may think – particularly if you’ve heard of Thomas & George.

Forget all the watch ads you’ve seen in issues of Robb Report, The Rake or Forbes. Stop thinking about the watch you saw in that movie or on that celebrity. Pay no heed to popularity. James Bond might wear a Rolex Submariner and so might your boss, but unless you work as a diving instructor or plan to use its features, you’re wasting money on a timepiece that isn’t worth your attention. Should it become a part of your collection? Of course. Should it be an everyday watch? Not a chance.

An everyday watch should be reflective of your lifestyle, your career, and your personal style. If you wear suits or blazers all day, picking a watch that passes the cuff test and is simplistically elegant should be the priority. If you happen to wear a uniform and are very active in your free time, you may want something more rugged and sporty.

Ideally, we recommend that most men have at least two watches. They don’t have to be expensive, but they should be distinct styles. One should be a dress watch and the other, a casual sports watch. For most men, regardless of what they do or where they are, having both of these watches will fill their horological needs every day of the year. For that reason, we’ve broken this article up into two main categories where we’ll discuss both styles at various price points.

The Everyday Dress Watch

Men's Watch, High Street Gent, Watch Tips, Watch, Top Tip, Men's Lifestyle

Pair it elegantly with a suit at the office, a tuxedo at the symphony, a blazer at the office party or a pair of chinos and a polo shirt on the weekend. The everyday dress watch is the most versatile timepiece in your wardrobe provided it’s not hitting the water or other extreme conditions.

Ideally, you want to try and select one that is made from the metal you most often wear. If you typically wear a ring, a belt or carry a money clip made of gold, consider gold. If your choice of metal is steel, pick one with steel. Of course, this can greatly impact the price, but it doesn’t have to be the deciding factor. What’s more important than the watch, is the band. Ideally, you’re going to want a leather strap over something that’s made of metal, rubber or nylon. Save those straps for the casual watch. Now you need to figure out whether to go with a black or a brown leather strap. For most of us, our wardrobe changes between black and brown shoes and belts. Ideally, your watch will change with it. If possible, select a timepiece that you can easily switch the strap on. Then you just need a second strap. However, if you can only go with one, we recommend black.

The face, or dial, of the watch, should be simple. Index markers or Roman numerals are fine, but there isn’t usually a need to have multiple complications. The simpler the dial is, the more you can wear it with. A white or cream dial is preferable over black or another colour as it goes with anything and black dialled watches are typically reserved for evening wear.

The Kingman 43 from T&G is perfect. Here are few of our recommended watches from the fantastic Thomas & George.

The Weekender

Men's Watch, High Street Gent, Watch Tips, Watch, Top Tip, Men's Lifestyle

It comes with various straps and bands as well as in a number of styles. A weekend watch is one watch that can be worn casually or on the field. At a starting price of just £44.99, this preppy timepiece is perfect for starving students and those on modest budgets. Take a closer look at the Chesterfield Brown here.

The Casual Gent

Men's Watch, High Street Gent, Watch Tips, Watch, Top Tip, Men's Lifestyle

If you’re more of a laid back chap, who prefers a sporty attire, a material strap is the choice for you. Its versatile, stylish and you can pair it with many an outfit of your choice.

The Chesterfield is the Thomas and George version of the world famous classic watch. With this specific design it’s extremely affordable for you without reducing the quality of the watch.

The Chesterfield comes with three straps, a blue and white nano strap and two leather straps. So, whatever the occasion, your Chesterfield can accompany you on all your adventures.

The Thomas & George brand is for the quintessential gentleman and you’ll not only see this in their marketing, but it’s in their values – it’s who they are.

How to write the best, best man speech

best man speech, wedding, being the best man

Even Bear Grylls reckons a best man speech is one of the hardest things a bloke can come up against. Yes, a fella who circumnavigated round the British Isles on a jet ski and drinks his own wee, thinks wedding speeches are difficult.

And despite the plethora of online templates and advice, delivering a best man speech is not getting any easier.

A decade ago you could wing it. You could Google some gags and expect granny hadn’t heard them before. You could roll out the Powerpoint and embarrass the groom with some childhood photos and guests would think you’d made an effort.

These days, not so much. The best man speech is still the most eagerly awaited but they’re often meet with good-natured groans rather than genuine laughter. They’ve become a caricature, with the traditional characteristics exaggerated to grotesque effect.

Seriously, that line about the honeymoon and the groom ‘going to Bagnor for two weeks’. Or the ‘humorous’ fake telegram from the football team saying they found the groom useless in most positions but wish the bride good luck. Cringe.

Cheesy gags and meaningless one-liners is not what a best man speech is meant to be. So here’s Speechy’s guide to writing a speech fit for a wedding in 2018. Take note comrade.

Humour

Best man, best man speech, wedding, wedding speech, high street gent

If you can take your jokes and use them in a speech about another groom, then you’re doing something wrong. Yes, we’ll allow you a few one-liners to break the ice but other than that, you’re on your own.

Certainly take inspiration from other best man speeches, but only the good ones. Check out how others have taken the personality of their mate and used that as the basis of their humour. As Homer Simpson so sagely says ‘It’s funny because it’s true’.

Start thinking about the things that make the groom unique. Everyone’s a nut-job, so what are the traits that his friends and family will recognise as truly ‘him’.

Ask yourself lots of questions – what’s his worst habit (wearing skinny jeans), what’s his guilty pleasure (Dire Straits), what might he love more than his bride (Abduls kebabs). You get the idea. Once you have good content to play with, the comedy should flow.

Don’t be scared to take the mick, it’s how British blokes show we care. Do, however, be scared of mentioning exes, stag do tales, in jokes and anything crude (innuendo’s fine, dirty isn’t). Also don’t tell any stories that might mean your mate needs to apologise to his wife.

Find a Theme

Best man, best man speech, wedding, wedding speech, high street gent

This is how your speech goes into the Premier League. Rather than just a trail of anecdotes, think of a way to theme your speech and tie everything together. This way you’ll capture the audience and no one will be checking their Whatsapp under the table.

So how do you think of your theme? Think about the groom’s personality traits. For example…

  • Is he a pseudo-intellectual? Use quotes from great thinkers throughout history to contrast with your mate.
  • Is he a bit of a geezer? Present the bride with an insider’s guide to understanding how his bloke-brain works.
  • Is he a football fan? Give a post-match analysis on his courtship with the bride and predict how well he’ll score as a husband

The theme doesn’t need to be overly clever to work.

Prove, don’t tell

Cut the clichés that most best men fall victim to. When it comes to ‘the nice bit’, rather than use adjectives, make sure you provide the evidence.

Don’t just say ‘he’s been there for you’, explain that he picked you up from the Hogs Head at 2am when every taxi refused to take you home. Tell everyone how he helped you get to grips with pensions and confess that you still owe him fifty quid. Highlight the real reasons he’s a top bloke and your speech will sound refreshing.

Big up the bride

In 2018 the bride needs to be more than an afterthought and you need to say more than she’s ‘made your mate happy’ and ‘looks beautiful today’. If you don’t know her well, then make an effort to do some digging. Find out about her and reflect that in your tribute to her.

Don’t feel you need to be overly gushing or pretend she’s a perfect princess. A good tribute can still be affectionately humorous.  It should reflect the sort of girl she is – even if it is a feisty Pinot-fiend with an adult-addiction to Monster Munch!

Props

Don’t bother. Most props just feel tired these days. Write a good speech and you won’t need them.

(Though one bit of kit you might need is a microphone. Check the groom has hired one if the acoustics of the venue require it. So many speeches are ruined simply because people can’t heard them).

Videos

It’s a total cop out from a delivery point of view but if you’ve got the skills and resources to invest in creating a cool video, then we’re all for it. Reconstruct moments from your past exploits together, visit the seminal locations from your teenage years, interview past teachers or ‘witnesses’ to bad behaviour.

There’s lots of good best man videos online but remember, like the traditional speech, less is often more. Even with a kickass soundtrack, you still want a duration well under ten minutes (though, in reality, that would take A LOT of filming!)

We hope this advice helps you nail it.

Speechy is the one-stop-shop for all your wedding speech needs. Whether it’s a template or a bespoke speech you’re after, Speechy can help you craft an awesome speech that will add a special moment to the wedding day. Visit speechy.co.uk.

Choosing the right underwear to impress

high street gent, men's underwear, underwear, best underwear to impress

A quick Google search will tell you that romantic underwear for men is all kinds of creepy and embarrassing. Buying a pair of pants that have hearts on them isn’t romantic and it’s definitely not sexy. Even worse, if you’re the “funny” guy, you may consider buying some sort of ridiculous thong that you’ll come out of the bathroom wearing, only to take off immediately in order to get your groove on, imminently.  Don’t do it! If that’s your idea of romance, you really need to sit down and work your way through Matthew McConaughey‘s back catalogue (before he decided to take acting seriously).

Ideally, most women’s perfect man would take his underwear queues from any David Beckham underwear campaign, rather, than go for something a little more Rocky Horror. Don’t do it! YOU DO NOT LOOK LIKE DAVID BECKHAM, and that’s cool. If you do, you’ll be part of the joke, because a fun game to play on Valentine’s Day, anniversaries and birthdays, is watching how many people are adjusting their bits and bobs in their special bras and pants, that they’ve donned to impress – forgetting that they really need to think of what suits them as opposed to what looks raunchy.

The fact of the matter is lads; yellowing, overstretched and outdated tighty whities do not get anyone’s pulse racing. If amore is on the docket, set the mood with man-drawers—boxers, briefs, manties, we’re not picky—that befit the occasion and the planet.

With the above in mind, we’ve teamed up with Deadgoodundies.com to highlight some of the key trends in underwear in 2018. It’s the perfect time for making the perfect romantic gesture…

DOING IT FOR YOURSELF

Men will be buying their own underwear far more in 2018. Growing confidence, interest in fashion, appreciating quality, enjoying shopping online – all of these could explain a rise in the purchase of underpants for men by men.

Sales at Deadgoodundies.com have shot up in the last year and the proportion of male buyers is higher than ever. As DGU founder Adam Davies explains: Being online we have always had a predominantly male audience but the percentage of female shoppers has reduced to single figures. Men like the choice, freedom and privacy of shopping online, especially for something as personal as pants.

COMFORT ALL THE WAY

high street gent, men's underwear, underwear, best underwear to impress

Men have always bought comfy kecks, right? Well, levels of personal comfort have rocketed with the use of soft but supportive fabrics, clever yarns such as Coolmax and combinations like cotton modal, but most of all through dedicated design, focused on the pouch. Brands like Comfyballs, which just debuted on DGU, make big promises on this score.

ERGONOMIC OOMPH

The thought of ball-boosting underwear has some men running for the hills, but now there are levels of this category is increasingly popular. Ergonomic designs can actually enhance or just make the most of what nature gave you, sometimes by; slightly differently in the same pair. The joys of ergonomics include aeration thanks to a bit of lift, a good shape under clothes, avoiding constant adjustments and, if you want to, great opportunities for showing off.

COLOUR COLOUR COLOUR

Brands say 2018 really will be the year of colour in men’s underwear, rivalling the male swimwear sector. Fancy colours, contrast waistbands, lively prints, you name it, they have it. Of course, white and black are always top sellers, but bright and subtle shades – everything from neon to pastel – are on the cards.

CAMO AND ANIMALS

Camouflage and animal prints never go out of style for gent’s undies. These days camo can be muted neutral tones rather than military khaki or blue. Watch out too for camo created from a uniform pattern of one image. Animal prints might be classic tiger or zebra, or a collage of pictures of the actual animal or its face. Remember the Chinese Year of the Dog starts in February. And make sure wild prints are grown up for the full effect, not strategically placed elephant’s trunks.

CLASSICS NEVER DATE

Classic underwear for men isn’t the boring stuff your Dad wore when he was young. A 2018 classic will have earned its keep as a consistent best seller bought over and over again by men who can’t give up that particular look, style, feel, colour… Think of safe brands like Jockey and Sloggi but also HOM, Doreanse and British Boxers.

Men’s hair and beard trends for 2018

Now we’ve taken our first steps into 2018, AND we’ve got January and the skintest month of the year out the way, we can’t help but wonder what it might bring: A smooth and effortless Brexit withdrawal? Don’t hold your breath. How about jetpacks? We hope so. Perhaps a full blown Twitter war will break out? With Trump around, who knows!

Here at The Bluebeards Revenge, the one thing we can accurately predict is the amazing hair and beard trends that the next 12 months will bring. Below, we’ve asked some of Britain’s most influential barbers to embrace their clairvoyant sides and provide the all-important hair and beard insights for 2018.

Is long hair coming back into fashion?

“Recently I’ve had quite a few clients asking to keep their length on both the top and the sides,” says Adam Rossington-Smith of Scissor and Comb UK. “This opens up 2018 to some very versatile styles, with a blend of clean tapered edges and soft, textured waves on top.”

What does this mean for the super popular fade styles of 2017?

Adam says: “I highly doubt that we will see a massive reduction of fades next year. Part of the reason they became so popular was because they are clean and super easy to maintain, and lots of men still don’t like the thought of having to prune too much.”

Meanwhile, Tom Chapman, award-winning barber and founder of the Lions Barber Collective charity, believes that, “fades will remain fashionable, but more men will start to favour tapers; looking for a finish that is less sharp. More men will start to ask for their edges to be left a little more natural too.”

What hairstyling products will be in popular demand for 2018?

Adam says: “Medium and long hairstyles will give men more opportunities to experiment with products. Personally, sea salt sprays are my absolute favourite right now. They add texture and a light hold to fine hair, and volume to thicker hair. They help to create a natural look as well, which is very fashionable right now and will continue to dominate throughout 2018.

““Volumizing powders have become a big hit for men seeking a natural look too. They’re easy to use and pretty cost effective – a 10 gram container should easily bulk up flat styles for a few months.”

Tom says: “With the right education, I think a lot of men could return to hair gels this year. As a product, modern hair gels are massively undervalued for their styling capabilities: softer gels can be used as pre-styling products to give styles structure all day and barbers often use them while sectioning medium and long hair.”

Will barbers struggle with any of the new trends?

Adam, who graduated from Toni & Guy before specialising in barbering, says: “Barbers who have joined the industry in the last few years will probably find themselves facing styles that they have never really had to deal with.

“Shorter styles have dominated the barbering scene for so long now that new barbers have likely had little experience with anything longer than a clipper cut on the sides.

“Of course, with longer haircuts comes the chance to learn endless new techniques for adding texture and creating movement. The new fashions will help barbers to develop their scissor skills and will provide practice in handling and sectioning longer hair. They will also show the importance of proper blow drying techniques and require a better understanding of less conventional styling products.”

2018 beard trends

With the trends for the hair on our heads covered, it’s time to concentrate on the stubble and scruff that sprouts from our chins.

Will beards still be popular in 2018?

The masculinity, maturity and respect that beards give to men means they will never completely fall out of fashion, no matter how far into the future we go. Simon ‘Bones’ Bethel, from Sandyman Chop Shop in Exeter, believes we will still continue to see a steady flow of beards throughout 2018. He said: “While there are fewer men sporting big bushy beards these days, we still do a lot of short beard trims in the Chop Shop. I don’t expect this to change for 2018.”

Beard styles for 2018

Over the past few years, rough-cut, lumberjack styles have dominated the look books, but the next 12 months will see changes according to Bones. “Men are starting to wear their beards shorter and with more shape,” he said. “These styles mean that creating strong cheek lines with razors, and tapering these into the sideburns and hair line will be the way forward.”

As beards get shorter, designer stubbles are likely to gain a little more traction too. Ex-serviceman and current Master Barber Liam Hamilton, from Hamilton’s Barbershop in Cornwall, says these looks are “ideal for men who want to add a little masculinity to their look.” They also work particularly well for men who are attempting to achieve a more “rugged” style, without the same timely maintenance of a full beard.

Beard products for 2018

“The men’s grooming market is receiving huge investments at the moment, and products that were previously unknown to men are now becoming essentials,” said Managing Director of The Bluebeards Revenge, David Hildrew. “Now, more than ever, men are taking an invested interest in their appearance and this is causing beard oils, brushes and waxes to boom in popularity.”

Liam, a bearded barber himself, says: “The best beards have a shine and healthiness to them that can only be created with high-quality beard oils. A few drops of oil, combed through from the roots to the tips, will enhance any man’s beard and leave it smelling irresistible.”

Moustache styles for 2018

2018 might just be the year for full and fuzzy moustaches. Finally, they’re seen less like Charlie Bronson’s and more like Tom Selleck’s.

“The humble moustache can help to add balance to the right man’s face, soften a more dominant jawline, and compliment a man’s eyebrows,” says Liam.

However, lots of men still struggle to confidently wear this facial accessory. “If you’re lacking the confidence to wear a moustache in 2018, why not wait until Movember comes around? Then you can hide in the crowd,” suggests Liam. “Or, if you’re feeling brave, try growing your stubble out around it. This helps to frame your moustache and won’t leave your face feeling so isolated and bare.”

Watch

watchcollection_451435

Some of these gifts are situational. For example, if you know that your friend, family member or a significant other has a job interview after the holidays, you may look for the way to help them out. Buying a full suit may be too expensive even for a Christmas gift. The right watch is much more than just a timepiece; it expresses who you are. Whether you are in a bar, at work, a formal event or even at the beach, your watch should be suitable for all occasions and it was for this reason that James Derby was born.

Manufactured with the highest quality Japanese movement in a stainless steel case, with sapphire crystal quality glass and genuine leather straps, each timepiece produced represents what the brand stands for with performance, charm, excitement, heritage and prestige coming together to create unique designs.

The high level of quality and excellence required from a modern day watch is paramount, which is why they have kept their collections small so they can ensure perfection across every single watch that they produce.

Chelsea Boots

chelsea_boot

The Chelsea boot is a great one to wear when the temperature drops, but when you still need something to wear that looks good in the office. These boots are laceless, so they are much better at keeping your feet and ankles warm, and you can find many great looking Chelsea boots that integrate modern soles, so they’re also extremely comfortable as well. Chelsea boots pair well with business casual clothing like jeans and cords.

There are many Chelsea Boots, but our company of 2017-18 has got to be Samuel Windsor.

Underwear

AVAJ

We hate buying it for ourselves, but all we want is manly or even funny underwear. It all depends on the particular person as well as if the gifted one (pun intended) is going to be on their own when they unwrap it. The underwear that caught our eye is AVA-J.

Gone are the days when men consider pants to be the ‘must not have’ Christmas present. That’s according to ava-j, a British internet retailer of luxury men’s underwear and Skincare products, manufactured in the UK.

Joe Goddard, Design and Operations Director at the Leeds based business says most men are now more than happy to receive such presents on Christmas morning, providing that the quality and style is top notch.

‘Men are more conscious about their appearance than ever before and that includes their pants,’ says Joe. ‘Traditionally it was only ever women who received nicely presented, stylish underwear, but we have now taken those core values of product, packaging and presentation into the male market and the reaction has been incredible, particularly from women buying for their husbands and partners.’

Sports Flask

hydro flask

For the adventurers who plan to be halfway up a climbing wall, mid warrior pose in the gym or doing the downward dog in 2018, the Standard Mouth Sports Cap from drinking bottle specialist Hydro Flask allows you to simply sip, refresh and go.

The American, award-winning company, which specialises in insulated drinking bottles, has added this versatile cap to its product range. It fits onto any of Hydro Flask’s Standard Mouth drinking bottles and is interchangeable. So it doesn’t matter whether you already own the 18, 21 or 24 ounce drinking bottle. One size fits all.

The Sports Cap is insulated, just like the drinking bottle, so any liquid kept inside will stay icy fresh for up to 24 hours offering unexpected refreshment. In fact, it’s the first-ever insulated sports cap specifically designed to keep water cold, sip after sip.

Its unique handle design means it can be used one-handed.

Socks

london sock exchange

Traditionally the most common Christmas gifts. Accidentally, they are also a perfect low-cost option for those who approach the holiday season on a tight budget. The London Sock Exchange offers socks, those with cutting edge patterns, tartan or polka dot motifs as classic as these presents get. However, if the person you’re gifting is a renowned jokester, you can even look for a prank-gift in a form of a particularly silly pair of socks. Needless to say, wearing these at any family gathering would be a great success.

Lets wrap this up…

As you can see, there is a great choice of great gifts for you to go through. The final choice comes down to your personal preference and what you believe your friend/partner would like. Choosing a great gift is not that hard, but in some situations great simply isn’t great.

Tomorrow we’ll be posting the perfect gift for her, if you’re struggling last minute. Keep an eye out!

Festival Must-Haves 2017

Festival menswear for the style for summer
What are you up for this summer? Staying home? Jetting off to warmer climes? Or joining the festivals? It’s not over yet!

Ban the boohoo’s this summer by being wardrobe ready for every festival you’re off to.

We’re just ahead of Creamfields, V-festival, Bestival and many more, so now it’s vital to get your summer wardrobe in check.

With our pals at boohooMAN we’ve pulled together some of the key essentials and things to think about this festival season, to make sure you’re looking as hot as the music pumping from the speakers and sun burning down on you…

T-Shirt & Tanks

boohooMAN men's festival style
If you can pull off basic wear in the classic way, you can pull it off in any way. A plain tee or tank MUST be part of your festival wardrobe.

Especially a white tee – it’s timeless, it’s cool, it’s causal and totally effortless.

Print & Pattern

Besides the clean basics, you NEED to incorporate print and/or patterns into your festival wardrobe.

This season band-tees are top of the bill. SO be the headline act in your group of mates.

If you never wear colours, print or patterns for your everyday outfit, THIS is the time to be playful and try out some new things in clothing! As far as festival fashion is concerned, everything goes (since you’ll find all types of people at a festival).

Denim Is Hot

Don’t hesitate about investing in great denim items. It’s a cool all-season essential that can be worn season after season.

If you’re unsure about what kind of wash you should go for, the mid/light-toned blue is IT. Light wash denim is totally stylish and summery, and you will find lots of inspiration for it in the recent street styles.

Black denim is also a great choice that works very well with white and other basic colours.

Jeans (Light, Loose & Raw)

Add denim jeans to the top of your “what to wear” list.

There has been a movement away from the mid-wash towards lighter washes and if you really wanna prove your style game, it’s time to switch out the skinny styles and look for something roomier.

If you’re looking for something different and attention-grapping, go for overalls or ripped, raw denim. Up its low-key vibe with a clean tee, sneakers or boots.

Shop now…

Shorts

Long story short – as summer heats up – bring back your shorts. Knee-length denim options are a good way to go. Chino shorts are also ideal and can be both dressed up and down.

Still, keep in mind that festivals are a great opportunity to be a bit more playful with your fashion choices. Search for different colours or shorts with prints.

Shop now…

Hoodies and Sweatshirts

boohooMAN festival wear for men
As the sun sets, you will likely need to layer up. A cotton sweatshirt is a must-have and a comfortable piece that can be tied around your waist or shoulders during the day and thrown on when required.

Opt for basics in different colours and perhaps something with print.

Keep your festival look easy and relaxed by wearing a hoodie.

Go for either a zip hoodie or a pullover, depending on what look you want. After you’ve made your choice, it’s just as easy as pulling on some cool jeans and a pair of lace-up boots or sneakers.

Shop now…

Comfy Shoes

Festival or not. Shoes are necessary.

The new cult, classic, minimalistic white sneakers are totally IN and simply a must-have. Still, keep in mind that festivals can get quite messy so if it’s a pair you love, buy another in case they get super dirty.

Boots, on the other hand, are also totally EPIC for festivals and slightly more bohemian inspired.

However, ensure that you have a stylish pair of shoes (or more) and that they are comfortable and will complement most of your festival outfits.

If it rains…

At festivals in Europe, you can’t always trust the weather, so be prepared.

Luckily, dressing for showers can be stylish: Bring a cool pair of wellies, a rain jacket and an umbrella if necessary.
