New label Drake & Hutch launches plan to bring clothing manufacturing back to the UK.

We recently featured Drake & Hutch in one of our men’s underwear must-have brands. Know the brand have some exciting news that we, here at High Street Gent, fully support…

Lancashire, 1st September 2016: New label Drake & Hutch have launched a campaign to revive the British textile industry and support jobs in the UK. By designing and manufacturing their new range of colourful socks in England they plan to bring back to life an industry that once thrived in the region they are based.

Founded by former buyer Pete McGuinness from Lancashire. The label creates everyday clothing essentials for women and men, designed in the heart of the countryside.

The companies new line of colourful socks are made in England and there are already plans for a future range of made in Scotland hats, gloves and scarves. All with the aim of supporting the British manufacturing.

Pete explains “I loved working in the clothing industry buying and developing for high-street labels, but I was always disappointed that despite an incredible textile history in the UK, so little clothing was made here.”

In the early 1900s UK textile production was in full swing. At one point an estimated 80% of the worlds cotton had passed through Manchester, known at the time as Cottonopolis. By the 1950s production was in rapid decline. In the 1970s the little manufacturing that was still based in the UK moved off-shore, mainly to China.

Pete goes onto say “Most of our suppliers are small family owned 3rd or 4th generation businesses. We work closely with them using our design capabilities and their expertise to create high quality wardrobe staples that are made to last, providing a little bit of affordable luxury you can enjoy everyday.

“Having regular contact with our suppliers means we know the clothing is being made ethically with fair wages supporting local communities.”

“instead of planning by season and predicting customer needs 12 months in advance like most labels, we listen to our customers and constantly develop the range based on feedback. This keeps it exciting for us as everyday we are looking at ways to evolve while our customers feel more like partners”.

Drake & Hutch have launched a campaign to support their British made socks via indiegogo.com, an online platform for funding creative projects (click here to view).

The future certainly looks bright for this forward thinking British label. Why not check out the campaign online now and support British manufacturing. As an extra incentive, the first 500 pairs of socks ordered will be delivered in time for Christmas making them the perfect gift!

The right shirt, for the right occasion

Hawes & Curtis Shoot 1

The shirt – a simple yet stylish staple item for any man’s wardrobe. But why should you stick to just the usual white formal shirt when you can add texture, dimension and colour in a number of ways with a variety of shirt styles?

If you’re looking for a shirt that has a superb fit, a recognisable finish and the class of the most dapperest gent, Hawes & Curtis is a must see. Hawes & Curtis is famous for its quintessentially British menswear and womenswear ranges. With over 100 years of heritage, Hawes & Curtis has a distinguished British past and a promising international future. The brand has stores in Germany and Dubai and has recently launched a German and Australian website. Thanks to its rapid international expansion and prominent online presence, Hawes & Curtis is an internationally recognised brand attracting customers from around the world.

It’s international success left us no option here at High Street Gent than to jump at the opportunity to feature them when they got in touch. Whilst we say thanks for the sample shirt we were sent (shown above) we’re going to run through a few other shirt options that you MUST consider from Hawes & Curtis and how, when and with what you can wear them.

Although there is a lot to consider when it comes to shirts, it’s not as hard as you think when it comes to choosing the right shirt, for the right occasion. Fresh from Hawes & Curtis we’ve pulled together the most common occasions and types of shirt, to guide you through…

FORMAL SHIRTS

Hawes & Curtis 1

Let’s start with the preppy shirt icon. The great thing about the formal shirt is that they’re made from a thicker material than your usual shirt – so perfect for the summer season and you can get away with losing the jacket in the office without looking under or half dressed. A simple white formal shirt under a patterned blazer will not cause you any complaints with your boss. However, there are many colourful styles available which can brighten up what could be considered an average outfit.

CURTIS CASUAL

Hawes & Curtis 4

Check shirts can be pretty versatile, but remember one small factor – the smaller the checks the smarter the shirt will become. So if you want something a little more sartorial choose a gingham or Prince of Wales check. The best jacket styles to wear over a smart checked shirt are either sports jackets or deconstructed jackets with relaxed shoulders teamed with neutral toned trousers and a brown brogue. If you want a more casual look simply wear the shirt with a leather jacket over or a chunky knit cardigan matched with jeans and boots.

FLANNEL/LINEN SHIRTS

Flannel shirts are the best when it comes to keeping warm since they were initially made for farmers and rangers. Their image changed and turned more towards becoming a fashionable shirt in the late 1980s to early 90s with an indie rock band vibe. There are a few ways in which you can wear the flannel shirt: open, over a loose t shirt with slim jeans and trainers for a casual look. Alternatively, button it up under a plain crew neck sweater, chinos and brogues for a smarter look. If a patterned shirt isn’t really something you like to wear then choose a shirt which consists of darker shades, or a more subtle pattern and keep the rest of your outfit fairly minimal.

WEEKEND COLLECTION SHIRTS

Denim shirts have always had a vintage aura about them and a streetwear style. However, you can also work this into a smart daywear look under a blazer if you choose the colours and styles wisely. Granted some offices would still consider the denim shirt a little too casual for work so this is something to consider before stepping out the door. You can create a subtle western vibe with stone washed jeans and a pair of neutral Chelsea or lace up derby boots. The key to teaming denim is to contrast shades e.g. a dark denim shirt with blue jeans or a stone washed denim shirt with dark wash jeans. Just avoid wearing all-denim of the same colour – you don’t want to leave the house looking like Justin Timberlake back in the 00s.

LONG SLEEVED POLO SHIRTS

Hawes & Curtis 2

The casual side of the shirt spectrum, however a practical option for most occasions. The polo shirt is a great ‘no frills’ shirt offered in a variety of colours and best worn with jeans and rugged boots for a casual look. You can also dress them up for the office with a blazer, which again might not be acceptable for some offices but you can make this look a little smarter by combining a checked shirt under the polo shirt and throwing a blazer over the top for a layered winter style.

THE UNBUTTONING…

Hawes & Curtis Shoot 3

The red and white pinstripe shirt pictured above was sent to us by Hawes & Curtis as a sample. The smart tailoring and quality of the material does not go unnoticed when wearing one of their shirts. The crisp cuffs and collar really give the shirt an executive feel and keep you looking dapper all day. In the office I’ve received many a compliment on the shirt. It’s a fantastic fit.

It’s important to remember that we’re all different shapes and sizes, and whilst a skinny fit shirt may fit me, it may not you. It’s best practice to every now and again pop by your local tailor and get yourself measured professionally. It’s best to know your neck size, chest and waist to put into practice further a field than just shirts. If it fits well, you’ll look well. Visit here for a size guide put together by Hawes & Curtis.

The most common cuts and fits you’ll come across are extra slim, slim, tailored and classic, be sure to familiarise yourself with what works for you.

How to choose a suit for a wedding

Jacamo 3Wedding season has been in full bloom. It’s the time of year when young couples declare their love for one another in front of weeping family and friends, and then everyone proceeds to get inappropriately hammered on some ritzy golf course or banquet hall. Being a wedding guest can be a stressful position: you have to RSVP on time, find a date, get a good gift, and try not to appear to drunk in front of someone else’s elderly relatives.

One of the most difficult parts of preparing to attend a wedding is finding the right thing to wear. Weddings are tricky because they’re somewhere between a night out on the town and a family gathering. You can’t get away with wearing what you would regularly wear on a Saturday night, but you also want to have an outfit that’s a little bit more fashion-forward than what you would wear to your aunt’s retirement party. Plus, weddings can be a great place to meet people if you’re single, so you’ll have to clean up well if you want a shot with that cute bridesmaid at the end of the table.

We had the utmost pleasure of being sent a suit from Jacamo to trial down the aisle, and even if we so ourselves…it was a hit. Jacamo’s suit ranges, which tailor for every type of gent (from tall to short, slim to those on the larger side) it’s one of the stores that truly stands out and expands to your needs (or waistband! haha). Jacamo offers the chance to get suited and booted with the sharpest range of men’s suits in a choice of colours, cuts and styles. Size is their best suit so you’ll find jackets with up to a 60″ chest and a collection for all you handsome, tall gents. For those of you not so tall, they even cater for a short leg, so if you do like the suit, you can still go ahead and give it a whirl.

Photographed is the Willliams & Brown London suit from Jacamo that we had the pleasure of wearing, but to help you pick a suit, with a little help from Jacamo, we’ve come up with what you should consider as a guest at the up-most of formal occasions…

Details

Formal wear can be difficult for guys, because a lot of the options out there look pretty similar. You don’t want to be just another guy standing around the bar at a wedding reception in an innocuous suit that’s indistinguishable from the one the guy next to you is wearing. How can you make sure that you stand out? The key to having a knock-out wedding outfit is in the details. Small accessories can spruce up any outfit that’s falling a little flat. Consider investing in a sharp pair of cuff-links, or a pocket square, or a pair of specialty socks. These little accents will add some flair that will single you out as the snazziest dresser at the reception. But remember: Everything in moderation. Add too many eye-catching accessories and you’ll end up looking like the eccentric musician the bride and groom hired for live entertainment.

Coordinate With Your Date

If you’re attending a wedding with a plus one, make sure you consult with them before choosing an outfit. Nobody wants to be that jerk who looks like he tried to out-dress his date, and clashing outfits will ruin all the pictures. Wearing a suit that complements your date is a classy move — people will be impressed by your ability to coordinate. Plus, if you’re struggling with what to wear, your date’s outfit may give you some direction. For example, if your date is going to wear a ’60s-era dress, consider wearing a ’60s-era suit to match. Again, subtlety is key, though — outfits that match in a really exaggerated way are better suited to comic book conventions, not wedding receptions.

Dress Practically

Is the wedding you’re attending taking place on a white-sand beach in the Caribbean? Then maybe don’t wear a heavier, synthetic fabric. Go with a lighter, natural fabric like cotton to keep yourself cool. Are the vows and the reception happening one after the other with no time to change in between? Then maybe opt for a tieless look and durable shoes so that you can keep dancing all night long. Take note of the practicalities of the situation — location, weather, length of event — and plan your outfit around it. Weddings are all-day affairs, so you have to choose an outfit you can feel comfortable in for a long period of time. Waistcosts are a nice add in, but bear in mind the weather, a hot day and its another layer to warm you up! You’re not going to impress anyone with what you’re wearing if you feel worn out, too hot, constricted, or in any way uncomfortable in your wedding-day outfit.

Don’t Be Careless

Don’t leave your wedding outfit preparation to the last minute. This one is a no-brainer, but it bears repeating. If you haven’t thought about what to wear at least a week or two in advance, you could end up in the suit you wore to your junior prom, the one that hasn’t fit in years and has holes in the crotch. Take the time to shop around for something nice. Consider buying something new; weddings are once-in-a-lifetime occasions, and if you’re close to the bride and groom, it might be worth dropping some cash on something a little special. Visit a tailor! — they’re generally not too expensive, and they can work with you to alter whatever clothes you have into something custom-made for your body type. And for God’s sake, make sure to shine your shoes and run an iron over everything before you leave the house. Presentation is everything!

Don’t Upstage

This is probably the most crucial tip. Being a guest at someone else’s wedding means that you ultimately have to resign yourself to the fact that the day’s events are not about you. It’s about celebrating the happy couple and their love for one another. Don’t steal the thunder by wearing some earth-shattering outfit. Play it cool and opt for something classic, a finely tailored suit or tux, nothing too over-the-top. If you wear something flashy, you’ll look like an attention-seeking dweeb who can’t let someone else have the spotlight for one afternoon. Most importantly, don’t wear a white suit. Yes, this rule applies to guys as well. White is the color the bride gets to wear. I don’t care if you totally look like James Bond in your white suit — don’t wear it. It’s just a dick move.

Gym must haves for Autumn

Summer is almost over and our sunny days on the swimming pools or at the beach are numbered. For a lot of people, this means going back to their regular workouts in the gym. And with this comes the age old question, what should we pack in our gym bag? Some people are organized and already know what they need, but the others have a hard time keeping track of what’s necessary and what’s not. That is why we compiled this list of must haves for your gym workouts this fall.

Water Bottle

This is a no-brainer for all gym rats out there, but a lot of people forget to put one in their gym bag. If you are one of the forgetful bunch, then we recommend that you to get one high-quality water bottle you will only use for the gym and always keep in your bag. They don’t wear out easily and don’t require much cleaning.

Gym Clothing

Workout clothes is something every gym lovers should think about. Sweating in the gym is normal and necessary, if you’re not sweating, you are not training hard enough and wearing the right gear.. That’s why you should look for high quality gym clothing like Distinct Clothing offers. Good pair of gym fit t-shirts or tanks and compression shorts are a must this fall.

Jockstraps

Jockstraps are very important if you do a lot of cardio and have a lot of bouncing down there. They will provide a much-needed support and keep your whole “package” in one place. There are a lot of models you can choose from, but essentially, what makes a good jockstrap is a resilient rear strap and a firm waistband. Pick designs that you like at JockUp and you are set to run for as long as you want. Also, wash your jockstrap frequently because they tend to get dirtier and smellier faster than the regular underwear.

Sports Watch

A good sports watch is absolutely necessary for gym workouts that include running or multiple rounds of exercises. We know that you can count in your head how much sets and reps you did on the bench, but if you really want to enhance your performance while doing time sensitive exercises, we strongly recommend that you get one. If you keep track of the time to the millisecond, you can see where your strength dips and improve on that. Some of the best sport watches you can check out here.

Body shapers

One last thing on our list is body shapers. The body shaper is essentially underwear that goes beneath your clothes to make your body figure leaner and add additional support. Some people question the need for body shapers in your workouts, but we think that they have wider use than just giving you a better look. Because of their tight grip they can provide additional support for your back, chest or belly, depending on what model you are wearing. Companies like Leonisa make one of the best body shapers on the market and offer a wide range of models. Pick the one you need and you will not only look better but also have much needed extra support during your intense workouts.

With this, we conclude our list of necessary equipment for your gym workouts. We hope that you found this article useful and that it reminded you of a few things that you would otherwise forget. So, this fall, when the summer is officially over and all of you gym lovers return to your sanctuaries, remember to pack items from this list and enjoy your workouts.

Festival Fundamentals

czech_summer_festival

Aren’t you getting thrilled about all the upcoming festivals? ‘Cos we are!

Summer alone is probably the most beautiful time of the year; add quality music to that – you’ve got yourself a paradise on earth. Tanned skin, tricky temptations, devilish inhibitions released, beautiful exhaustion, inexplicable excitement, love, good vibes, beats that are taking you higher and all the dancing may be just some of the awesome reasons why you should fall in love with every single moment of your festival time.

Don’t you think festival fashion tips for guys seem comparatively thin on the ground. Then again, do we really care?

Let’s be honest, will there be beers? Yes. Will there be sun? Hopefully. Will there be unforgettable performances you’ll bear witness to and boastingly reference at parties in the future? Most likely. So, why the hell would you care about you’ve got on?

Well you’ll have an amazing time – but, after all, a few things you need to think about prior to dispatching on your summer ride. Don’t get stressed all of a sudden – it’s nothing serious… but it’s definitely helpful! Here’s what we are talking about:

1. Protect your feet!

festival-goers

However cool you might think you look in your trainers, they are not the right footwear for a British festival. Instead, prepare for inclement weather with a pair of waterproof, slip-resistant wellies (remember, kids, mud is a great leveller).

The Independent consulted festival goers of all ages to bring you the best boots for the job – from inexpensive pairs that will keep your feet dry and mud free, to seriously hard-wearing ones that will last for a decade. Take a look here.

2. Wear the right pair of underwear

Drake and Hutch underwear

While to some of you this may be a given, there are others who aren’t really thinking in that direction. Truth is, when you are going to a festival, no matter how stylish and edgy your personal fashion is, you need to be comfortable first and then follow up with some good fashion. Naturally, a huge (and maybe base, even) part of that comfort is the type of underwear you have on. You want something you can move in, something that won’t give you a wedgie (go on, laugh) or feel unnatural on your skin. So the perfect choice is Drake & Hutch underwear. Their fabrics are  made of natural fibers and the cut flattering. Just think about it – you’ll be moving around in that underwear, dancing, walking, sweating (maybe even pee a little when the line to the bathroom is lengthy or the run to the nearest bush too long) – so you want them to be of the right, comfy kind.

…and if we’re being honest, you’re going to be in the same pair for days, aren’t you chaps? Make sure they’re decent ones!

3. Kill ‘em with style

Festivals are all about self-expression, crazy outfits and released inhibitions… and are there better ways to express yourself at occasions like these, but wear things that show your amazing personality? Put on your favourite funky tee and rock that festival fashion better than anyone around. Go for the Dedicated tees or cropped tops, that amazing graphic print or your floral boho and enjoy the ride! It would be wise to pack another shirt you’ll be changing into after you get soaking wet (there’ll be a lot of dancing involved, after all).

Remember however, the nights can get chilly, so it’s always worth chucking your favourite hoodie or sweater jumper in your bag to wrap up when the sun goes down.

4. Put on a pair of weather appropriate shorts

Bowler & Beach Festival

It’s understandable you want to rock your style and show it off at every corner, as you should. But! Be smart enough to go for clothes that are both stylish and functional. Opting for a pair of Bowler & Beach shorts instead of a pair that you would be freezing/sweating in is way smarter and way more practical. Plus, you don’t want people looking at you like you’ve gone crazy for wearing a see-through mini shorts with 60 ºF out!

If Glastonbury this year is anything to go by, it’s going to be wet, it’s going to be muddy, so you want something that will dry quickly, not be too-clingy and always breezey.

5. Bring a raincoat

Festival Goers endure the rain at main stage during T In The Park Festival

It’s true – we often associate raincoats to those huge, shapeless pieces of clothes our mums used to dress us in whenever there was even a hint of rain out. But guess what – turns out mums knew their business after all. Not only that raincoats do actually protect from the (heavy) rains but they’re also making a comeback in the fashion world! They now come in variety of cuts, colours and prints, and are definitely a piece everyone should include in their wardrobe, especially when they are going somewhere for a longer period of time. The best raincoat pieces we’ve spotted lately are on Peter’s of Kensington website, so make sure you do your buying before hitting the road.

Lastly, stay safe, wear sun cream and make some memories.

Have fun, take photos, enjoy your time and make mental images of everything you fail to capture through your lens – you’ll remember it for life!

Feel free to let us know which festivals you’re attending this year and what you will be wearing in the comments section below…

What to wear to work?

It can sometimes be hard to figure out what to wear to certain occasions, especially to work. How nice are you supposed to dress? What shoes should you wear? Does this even match? Your first job, or even a job interview is one of life’s most significant milestones. As a young person, it may seem as though employers are extra weary of how you carry yourself, which is why dressing your best is important to make a good first impression. It can be hard to figure out exactly what to wear, and it can also be something that puts a rather large dent in your wallet. But, thankfully, there are affordable and stylish clothes out there that will help you land and keep your dream job.

First things first. Get a sense of the atmosphere of where your job will be as much as you can. You can look up the company online, or even ask whoever you will be interviewing with what the workplace dress code is. Then, depending on what the dress code is, you can base your outfits off that. But, a rule of thumb is that you would rather be overdressed than be under-dressed, so try and spruce it up a couple notches above the acceptable look.

With the help of T.M. Lewin, take a look at their very clever info-graphic to give you all the tips your need based on your career choice…

Let’s keep this brief

_DSC0961

All men, regardless of age, occupation or lifestyle, deserve great underwear particularly in the summer months. That is, underwear that both feels and looks better than just “good, I guess.”

That means underwear that 1) fits, 2) doesn’t have holes in it, 3) is less than five years old, and 4) doesn’t induce cringing when your trousers come off.

Beyond being a practical necessity, slipping on a decent pair of underpants in the morning is one of the most important parts of starting a new day. Think of a good, clean, well-fitting, sexy (yes, sexy) pair of underwear as a psychological advantage…especially in summer!

Sure, some guys will argue that the type underwear doesn’t really matter, it does, even more so in summer! Think of your pants gents as a woman would think of her bra. She gets the right style, support and SIZE that’s specific to her. We need to do the same!

eroix-waimea-76

All us chaps do varying jobs, have varying lifestyles and different needs, so on these hot summer days and what could be uncomfortable nights, if you find yourself rearranging yourself, it’s probably because the pants you are wearing aren’t right for you!

So now that we all agree, the challenge is to find you just the right pair. There are a lot of different styles, looks, and degrees of premium-ness — and each has its own place in a man’s wardrobe. Here are some of the best makes and styles available that offer A-grade value without threatening your riches.

Drake & Hutch

Drake and Hutch 4

The Kensington Brief -British label Drake & Hutch believe change is long overdue and have broken away from the traditional closed door retail model by providing “excellence through transparency in production”. A simple idea, from cotton grower to garment maker, every stage of production is advised for each luxury garment created.

Increasingly popular, trunks are the beautiful hybrid of briefs and boxers. The most recognizable trait of trunks is their squareness, which is due to their short legs. They are highly versatile since they hug the body, avoiding the potential bunchiness of boxers. If you usually wear briefs but are interested in trying something different, this is a good option.

If you’re after a classic underwear cut and style, but with a modern design and cracking support. Drake & hutch are for you. There’s absolutely no way you’d fear running around in your underwear on a warm evening at home in these, the understated logo on the waistband adds a touch of class.

EROIX

EROIX-Underneathwear-START-EVERY-DAY-WITH-STYLE-ONRAIL

EROIX: the outstanding things you do, and the objects that serve you exceptionally well. They are the things that add up to make you feel like a hero.

Making EROIX serves a purpose for its family. It’s purpose is to inspire us to learn, create, and share. More specifically, they aim to create your favourite essential garments. To learn and share inspiring ways of life. And to support social and environmental health and healing.

If you’re after support, but don’t like a tight fit, EROIX Underneath Wear are perfect for you. Sporty, with a classic edge, this underwear allows you ‘room to breath’ and come in wholesome stylish colours. The tie up front allows easy access if you’re playing sport in those ’emergency’ situations and hold you in place for the times your package needs the ultimate support.

Generally loose-fitting, boxers provide the least amount of support out of all the styles. That said, since nothing is too “compartmentalized”, air circulates more freely, meaning they are also the most breathable. While traditional boxers tend to be almost baggy, more trendier options lean towards slimmer fits. They also have an open fly for easy access and exit, which is nice.

Undamentals

SM_undamentals_tube_Twitter

Most guys own at least one pair of briefs — they are the standard, go-to style that have been around forever. They cover all the important stuff (your backside and package), but leave the thighs uncovered. The minimal fabric means absolutely no bunching under tighter fitting pants, and total versatility. Briefs also tend to come in three rises: high, medium, and low. For optimum comfort, make sure you match the rise of your chosen underwear with the pants you’re wearing.

Your underwear is Undamentals to your daily life, so why compromise? Let Undamentals
breathe new life into your underwear and keep it fresh forever. Always hassle free and with understated style – try their underwear, love their underwear and trust them to manage your underwear drawer.

Their briefs are impeccable. If, like us, you’re a chap who needs the ultimate support, the Undamentals briefs are perfect for you. Not restricting, have a breathable material that allows you not to feel cramped and ultimately look good – these briefs could be your best mate, in the office, at the gym, when in town. A must try.

Society Socks

Society socks are the ultimate blend of craftsmanship and style. Turn the traditional understanding of socks inside out and create products that show your individuality. Society Socks support the notion that socks shouldn’t be dull and colourless, but bold and expressive.

Socks are the least donated, but most needed clothing item. Since homeless shelters only accept new socks, it’s much more difficult to donate them compared to other used clothing. Society Socks will help change this.

You can really tell that the company are focused on fantastic quality for fantastic prices! The quality and styles are great.

They look and feel great. You don’t imagine there’s a huge difference when it comes to socks but you really can tell when you’re putting on a decent pair. The quality is instantly apparent compared to the pairs from High Street giants!

Society Socks is all about fostering a community of people that care about each other’s well-being. A gesture as small as donating one pair of socks leads the way to a better society. A pair of socks is a small stepping stone towards greater change. All we need to do is set the gears in motion.

They believe that one of the most effective ways to drive change is through social entrepreneurship. From this, the Society Socks pair for pair model was born. With every pair of socks that is purchased, they will donate a pair to the Covenant House Toronto, an organisation helping the city’s homeless youth. Let’s change the world together. Keeping it cool in the heatwave

Soaking up some sun

Summer can be a tough time for us chaps, especially when out of nowhere the sun cranks up it’s temperature gage and treats us all. What do we wear, what do we do, we’re sweating, it’s grim…Well we thought we’d help, and lets be honest, if we didn’t hurry up and get this post out, we’d all be reaching for our umbrellas again in no time!

So when traditional work suits and cotton dress shirts become unbearable, what should a fashionable man wear?

We’ve seen a couple different articles and style guides for warm weather dressing, but none of them complete or detailed enough to pass for a real comprehensive resource.

This guide is our attempt at a full hot-weather clothing resource. Everything in it should be functional at temperatures into the 90s (32+ C) and even hotter…

Priorities

What matters when it’s hot, and what doesn’t. The things you should think about when you buy hot-weather clothing.

Looks are always important, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. When the mercury climbs up above 80 degrees (26.6 C) you need functional clothing. Consider these the most essential characteristics for hot weather menswear:

Light Weight

img_5413

Swim shorts from Bowler & Beach

This should really go without saying. You want cloth that is physically light. The less ounces/grams of textile piled up on your skin, the less work you’re doing and the easier it is for air to circulate.

Wool is the only cloth that you can almost always get a weight for in specific ounces. You’ll see it for cotton and linen some of the time, but frequently you’ll need to try on a garment, or at least pick it up, to see how heavy it’s going to be.

Whenever possible, try hot weather clothes on before buying. Ten minutes of gently moving around the store or changing room will give you a very good idea of how easy it is to carry the weight. If you’re sweating after that, it’s definitely not going to be fun to wear on a hot day in the sun.

Breathability

Young man on the streets of big city.

This is just as important as light weight, if not more so!

You need air circulating over your body to stay cool. Fabric that doesn’t breathe well will trap both sweat and hot air near your skin, leading to rapid overheating.

Finer threads, looser weaves, and more porous materials all help add to a textile’s breathability. Artificial fibers are typically non-breathable, and will make a garment more likely to keep sweat and air in.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of a good weave as well as a good fabric. A lot of cheaper manufacturers will sell anything cotton as “summer wear,” regardless of whether it’s any good in hot weather or not. A tight cotton weave holds both air and moisture in — it’ll be pure torture to wear on an 80-degree day.

Sun Protection

OV3A1442-DONE

Style & accessories from Mancave London

Most men spend less time thinking about sun protection than they should. Even dark-skinned men will feel the heat more in the sun, regardless of whether their skin can burn or not, and lighter-skinned men can find themselves in a lot of pain if they’re not careful.

Happily, classic men’s styles lend themselves well to full-body protection. Long sleeves and full trouser legs can be more cooling than a T-shirt and shorts in the right conditions. Hats and sunglasses play their role as well. And light colors will reflect far more sunlight than darker shades, keeping your clothes themselves from growing warmer in the sun.

Every warm-weather outfit should include a moment or two of thought for whether it can cover more skin comfortably or not. The less direct sun you’re soaking up the happier you’ll be, so long as it can be done with light and breathable fabrics.

Deliberate Style

The trouble with most summer outfits is that they’re products of necessity, not style. You throw on shorts and a T-shirt so that you don’t overheat, not because they look good.

Looking stylish in the summer is as much about small, deliberate gestures as it is anything else. Khakis and a white shirt are comfortable, but you look like a low-level IT staffer.

When you make a summer outfit you need to be thinking about the colors, patterns, textures, and accessories all together. The difference between stylish and just functional could be as small as a different belt or the right pocket square.

But if you don’t take the time to make that small difference you just look like one more overheated office guy. So believe us when we say that style is as important an element of hot weather clothing as breathable cloth!

Keep your style cool this summer…

Best gifts for guys

They often say girls are terrible to shop for; will they like it, will they enjoy it, is it modern enough, is it passé, will they be enchanted by that present’s utility as much as with its packaging, etc. Well, guess what – guys are just as hard to please!

Luckily, we’ve managed to brainstorm a list of presents that will make even the biggest demanders happy, and we’re happy to share it with you.

Ready?
Set.
GO!

A quality aftershave

Like you already didn’t know this… but, truth is – when we start thinking about what to buy for someone, we get wrapped into so many ideas that we often don’t remember the classic, amazing types of presents everyone adores.

If you already know your man’s preferences, choose a perfume like Gruhme that agrees with his charm, energy and oomph, and let him love every second of it! If, however, you aren’t as sure which one to buy, talk to his best friend(s) to see what he may enjoy. Each time that perfume touches his skin, he’s going to think of you. Too cute!

Collar stiffeners

For guys who are into their smart suits, tailored jackets and custom made shirts, high quality collar stiffeners are the present to buy.

All the gorgeous, dashing gentleman deserve only the best and our favorite option to go with is StiffiesTM. Why? They feature super strong magnetic buttons which will allow for collar placement into any position your man may like. Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to unbutton it very quickly. 😉

A tie

Is your man a business mogul who likes his outfits and accessories that fit like a glove? Well, if so – you can’t go wrong with buying him a Brother & Gent tie. No, not just any tie; make sure your present is of enviable quality with a pattern not many gentlemen can rock. Throw in a golden pin to follow, and you’re running for making this his favorite present.

High quality underwear

No man ever has shrugged his shoulders in indifference when he was presented with a pair (or an entire pack) of Jacksy underwear that emphasizes his assets (or simply gives his assets the right support)! Buying a present like this one is easy – you already know his size (oh, come on, like we didn’t know that!) and you know what his favorite brand is, so – it really shouldn’t be hard.

Grooming kit

No beard should ever suffer (Was this pun intended? Oh well…)! For all the boys and men out there who like their beards properly attended to and groomed well, a Manly Stuff grooming kit is the thing to get them. It’s highly likely your man’s got one of those awesome hipster beards going on, and we guarantee he’ll be over the moon when you buy him this. Add a few beard products, too – like beard oils, gels, beard comb and such stuff and you’ll capture his heart.

A modern watch

Perfect for men of all profiles, a modern watch will make even those hard to please totally melt. Depending on your man’s style, pick a Detomaso watch that will agree with his wrist size and his overall accessorize preferences. If he’s into vintage accessorize, find a watch he’ll go crazy over and inscribe it. Adorable!

Fitness Gear

No wonder your man’s got that body! With so many hours in the gym under his belt, he better be smokin’! If fitness is his thing, make sure you buy him something he will actually use – great workout gear, proteins, golden gym membership card and such gym necessities. Additionally, if he’s into outdoor sports like riding a bike, jogging or riding a motorcycle, buy him the latest fitness hit – reflective tapes. They are made in various colors, are super easy to wear with virtually any type of clothes and will make him safe during his late night runs. The best models can be bought at Brilliant Reflective page, for sure.

Whichever of the presents you opt for, make sure you present them with a huge smile and an embrace that will make your man feel loved, desired and oh-so-special!

Mobs London – from teen to gent

Mobs

MOBS LONDON is a brand new London based company specialising in lifestyle products for young men. MOBS LONDON was set up for a couple of reasons, one being a flooded gift market for young ladies and secondly a poor minimal selection of products for young men.

I can remember being 13 years old and wanting to step away from the t-shirts with cartoon characters on, the full sports-kits, childish outer-wear and dress like a grown-up…the only problem with that, was the fact that the sizes of clothing for a small man were far too big for my (still) boyish frame! Although I was 13, I definitely thought I was going on 30 and that one size fit all; the truth was the t-shirts, trousers and jackets were all too long and definitely oversized from any high street retailer! It frustrated me and it frustrated my mum!

It’s exactly the reasons mentioned above how MOBS LONDON came about. MOBS have created a brand working with UK designers and printers to produce some exclusive apparel. Alongside the MOBS LONDON brand they have high quality products which have been carefully sourced, trying wherever possible to work with manufacturers in the UK, for the purpose of the younger adult.

Mums…fear no-more, finally!

With the above in mind, in this article we’re going to look at a few of items from Mobs’ collection and show you that this brand, although aimed at young men is still appropriate for those pushing out of the target age bracket (like ourselves!) and a few ideas to style them.

Logo T-Shirt (Black) £20.00

The beauty of a plain t-shirt is the ability to dress it up or down. For summer, grab your lumberjack shirt, throw it round and your waist. This kind of t-shirt is easy to wear in any occasion with any clothing.

Blah Hat T-Shirt £30.00

A white tee, with a printed image is easy to wear with jeans and trainers.

Red ‘Y’ Tee £30.00

This red tee, is perfect for summer 2016 – one of the key trends for this season is bold colours…it’s bang on trend!

All in all, MOBS is a cool, simple and well designed brand that has been created that on the whole includes chaps from the pre-teen age all the way up to us in our late twenties!

The website is easy to navigate, with lots of product photography and the quality of the items are demonstrated throughout the site. The prices are clearly listed so there are no shocks or surprises at the checkout.

It was about time someone spotted this gap in the market and filled perfectly with a brand that any age of gent would be happy to wear, tricky job, but with the bright colours, simple designs, no age restrictions are placed on these products.

Not only does the brand sell t-shirts, they sell the following items:

The one-stop shop for the younger gent was founded by the wives of Gary Barlow and Jason Donovan: Dawn Barlow, who has three children with Gary, and Angela Malloch, who has three with Donovan…after becoming frustrated while trying to find gifts for their teenage sons.

Dawn said: “We felt the market was flooded with great products for girls and, unless you want tech or novelty, nothing for the boys. It was as simple as us just saying to each other ‘Why don’t we fill the gap ourselves?’ We did a lot of market research, mostly on our boys and their friends. We found they really like to keep things simple and that was a good starting point.

The brand remains true to it’s ethos, whilst broadening it’s horizon’s and making it an appealing brand for all.

I’m sure this is one Mum’s and Son’s are going to love!

Here’s what we got from MOBS and how it looked when it arrived:
